All Saints Day

Collect of the Day – Almighty and everlasting God, You knit together Your faithful people of all times and places into one holy communion, the mystical body of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Grant us so to follow Your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living that, together with them, we may come to the unspeakable joys You have prepared for those who love You; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Adult Bible Study - Our Sunday morning adult Bible study class is discussing the benefit of meditating on the six chief parts of the Catechism through Scripture and prayer.  We’ll be using the book The Lord Will Answer: A Daily Prayer Catechism.  A copy of the book will be provided for everyone to use.

Advent-Christmas Invites - We are going to try to make everyone feel welcomed and loved at St. John's again this year with our Advent-Christmas invites!  Consider personally delivering a card to a neighbor, friend, or family member on the table in back of church.  Let them know that you would love to worship with them this Advent and Christmas season, and that you are happy to be their brother or sister in Christ.  Also, tell us on the sign-up sheet in back who you delivered cards to so that we can get a better sense of who is well connected with some of our less active members.  There are also a few blank cards that you can deliver to non-members.  Any remaining cards will be mailed on November 25th.

The Giving Pew - The TLC Quilters have set up the "giving pew" at St. John's!  The pew near the east doors will be stocked with a quilt and other items made by the quilters for the purpose of our members taking them in a time of need or delivering them to someone they know who is in need of warmth, comfort, support, or love.  There is no need to tell anyone who the quilt is going to, the quilters are just happy to know someone is getting the care they need.  A favorite practice of the quilters is when a quilt is finished to pray that whoever ends up with their quilt would know the love of God in Christ Jesus who motivates their many works of mercy.

Funeral Planning Workshop – Our partnership funeral planning workshop will be Saturday, Nov. 16th at the Trinity Life Center with breakfast at 8:30 a.m. and the workshop beginning at 9:00 a.m.  Pastors Cowell and Schlund will lead us in examining our Christian understanding of life, death, and resurrection and offer advice on Scripture and hymn choices for the funeral service.  Jayme Lentz will also be there to provide some practical advice on pre-planning funeral details with a funeral home.  All ages are encouraged to attend.

Ladies Aid will meet Thursday, November 7th at 1:30 p.m. Linda Kerkove is the hostess, Mary Lou Marlow has devotions and Pastor will present the Bible Study for the afternoon.

Thanksgiving Service at St. John’s is Wednesday, November 27th at 6:30 p.m. with Holy Communion.  Trinity, Algona’s Thanksgiving service is Thursday, November 28th at 9:00 a.m.

Donate Your Old Bibles - Do you have old Bibles at home that you no longer read (hopefully because you have newer Bibles that you do read!)?  We are collecting old Bibles at St. John's to share with people who have no Bible of their own.  The Bibles will go to IOWAY of Iowa District West who will transport them to the Takin' it to the Streets charity in Omaha.  This organizations provides food, clothes, skills, and Christ's love to those who need it in the Omaha area.  You can drop your Bibles off at the gray box in the back of church.

LLL/LHM Fall Breakfast – Lutheran Laymen League and Lutheran Hour Ministries is hosting a breakfast and Bible study on Saturday, November 9th with registration at 8 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran in Mallard.  Dr. James Lamb will begin his presentation at 8:45 a.m.  The cost is $15.

Lectionary Summary:  All Saints Day Revelation 7: (2–8) 9–17; 1 John 3:1–3; Matthew 5:1–12

Saints Are Blessed in the Eternal Presence of Christ

“A great multitude … from all tribes and peoples and languages” cry out, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne” (Rev. 7:9–10). Faith-filled saints from every place and time with unified voices eternally magnify the Lamb of God. As His beloved children, we, too, “shall see him as he is” (1 John 3:2). Joined with the throng of angels and countless saints, we shall “serve him day and night in his temple” (Rev. 7:15). In our earthly tension vacillating between saint and sinner, faith and doubt, sacred and profane, we earnestly seek Jesus to calm our fears, comfort our spirits and forgive our sins. The Holy Spirit, through faith in Christ, propels us forward, fortifying us in Word and Sacrament, to our eternal home. In the midst of our constant struggle as believers, we need to be blessed. And so we are. The poor in spirit, the meek, the hungry, the thirsty, the merciful, the pure and the persecuted are all blessed, and we will most certainly inherit the kingdom of heaven (Matt. 5:1–12).

Reformation Day

Collect of the Day – Almighty and gracious Lord, pour out Your Holy Spirit on Your faithful people. Keep us steadfast in Your grace and truth, protect and deliver us in times of temptation, defend us against all enemies, and grant to Your Church Your saving peace; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Funeral Planning Workshop - I know you are all dying to attend a funeral planning workshop, but let me tell you why you should attend!  Your funeral is an opportunity to leave your family with a confident and comforting confession of your faith in Jesus and your hope in the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.  This is why we encourage you to work with your pastor to choose your own Scripture readings and hymns for your funeral service.  For obvious reasons these selections must be made before the day of your funeral... so what better time than our Partnership Funeral Planning Workshop!  The event will be Saturday, Nov.

Lectionary Summary:  Reformation Day Revelation 14:6-7; Romans 3:19-28; John 8:31-36 or Matthew 11:12-19

The Son of God Has Set Us Free from Sin and Death by His Grace

“Wisdom is justified by her deeds” (Matt. 11:19), and the true Wisdom of God, Christ Jesus the incarnate Son, justifies us by His deeds. He prepares His way by the preaching of repentance, but He has suffered the violence of the Law and voluntarily handed Himself over to violent men, that we might eat and drink with Him in His Kingdom and “remain in the house forever” (John 8:35).  For He is “a friend of tax collectors and sinners” (Matt. 11:19), and He has rescued us by His grace from the slavery of sin and death. By the proclamation of His eternal Gospel “to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people” (Rev. 14:6), “the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law” (Rom. 3:21), “that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus” (Rom. 3:26). And by hearing the Gospel of Christ Jesus, “whom God put forward as a propitiation by His blood, to be received by faith” (Rom. 3:25), “you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31–32).

Membership Updates - There is a letter on the back table with a list of out-of-the-area members who we are going to vote to remove at our October 20th Voters meeting.  Ask Pastor or an Elder if you have any further questions after reading the letter.  Keep in mind that our removal of these people from our membership does not say anything about their faith.  Rather, their removal communicates our congregation's inability to claim responsibility for caring for their faith.  Any of these removed members who continue to confess the faith of our Lutheran Confessions are welcome to receive the Lord's Supper with us when they visit.

Lectionary Summary: The Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost - Ruth 1:1–19a; 2 Timothy 2:1–13; Luke 17:11–19

Faith Returns Thanks to God and Worships Him in the Person of Christ Jesus

Jesus comes in mercy and, by His Word, heals you in body and soul. “Go and show yourselves to the priests,” for you are cleansed (Luke 17:14), and you are granted access to the Lord’s temple. It is at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks” (Luke 17:16), that you worship God, for Christ Jesus is your great High Priest; His body is the true temple. In Him, you “find rest, each of you in the house of her husband” (Ruth 1:9), for the Lord has “visited his people and given them food” (Ruth 1:6). The person of Jesus Christ lodges Himself in holy food — bread and wine for believers to eat and drink. You lodge where Jesus lodges; His Father is your God, His people are your people. Death cannot part you from Him because His death and resurrection are eternally yours through Holy Baptism. “Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead” (2 Tim. 2:8). As surely as death could not hold Him, so surely “the word of God is not bound” (2 Tim. 2:9). His Gospel is entrusted “to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also” (2 Tim. 2:2), so that you “may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus” (2 Tim. 2:10). Such is the confession of faith for all the saints, who believe, teach and confess the one Lord and Savior — Jesus Christ.  - lcms.org/worship/lectionary-summaries

Grant that those things which we ask in faith we may receive through Your bountiful mercy; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

The Altar Flowers this morning were given in celebration of 55 years of marriage by Boyd and Rosann Shipler.

Adult Bible Study - Our Sunday morning adult Bible study class is discussing the God-given character of man and woman as described in the Bible.  We'll also occasionally reference Pastor Jeffrey Hemmer's book, Man Up! The Quest for Masculinity.  Talk to Pastor Cowell if you are interested in purchasing a copy of the book.

LWML Sunday Today

·   LWML will be serving coffee and cookies following the service today in celebration of LWML Sunday.

·   LWML  Group is asking for your help to raise money for mites to do the Lord's work around the world. Give your LWML offering in the back on either the left side of the aisle or the right depending on where you sit for church and we will see which side wins. We all will win!  Thank you for your help.  LWML.

Mission Support Updates about Pastor James May and the Gate Church are available on the table in the back.

Quarterly Council Meeting is Sunday, October 13th following the service.  The Voter’s Meeting is Sunday, October 20th.

Algona Circuit Reformation Hymn-Sing - Join the congregations of the Algona Circuit of Iowa District West for our Reformation hymn-sing! The event will be held Sunday, October 27th at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Algona.  During the hymn-sing you’ll get the chance to hear some of the history and theology behind the great hymns of the Lutheran Reformation as well as enjoy singing them with our brothers and sisters in Christ from around the area.  Local musician Glenn Henriksen will be our organist for the event.  We will enjoy refreshments and social time in the Trinity Life Center following the hymn-sing.

A Simple Explanation of Holy Communion - Have you ever struggled to answer questions about Holy Communion such as: How are the bread and wine the body and blood of Christ? What is the benefit of receiving the Lord's Supper? Why should we receive it frequently? How should we prepare to receive it? With whom should and shouldn't we receive Communion?  The answer to these questions and more can be found in A Simple Explanation of Holy Communion available for free on the back table.  These short, simply written answers to important questions about the Lord's Supper are a great resource for you as you consider them for yourself or in conversation with family and friends.  Feel free to take extra copies to give to family and friends as well.
