Pastoral Call Received and Declined - On Tuesday, October 13th, I (Pastor Cowell) received a call to serve as pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sumner and St. John Lutheran Church in Spring Fountain, IA. On Friday, October 16th, I declined that call, electing to remain serving as pastor of St. John’s and Trinity. The next couple weeks in church we will be praying for our friends in Christ at St. Paul and St. John that God bless them with a pastor to serve Him among them.

New “Socially Distant” Divine Service Available - Our midweek spoken Divine Service continues every Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. at St. John’s.  Feel free to attend any Wednesday, there will be plenty of room for you to sit at a distance from others.  If you need to receive the Lord’s Supper at home or on a different day, Pastor Cowell is always happy to schedule a visit.  You can call Pastor Cowell on his cell phone at 319-464-5548.

Then, every time you shop on Amazon do not go to amazon.com; instead go to smile.amazon.com to do your online shopping.  Everything at smile.amazon.com is exactly the same, except that you will now be donating 0.5% of eligible purchases to St. John’s!  0.5% doesn’t sound like a lot, but in four years Amazon Smile has donated $957 to St. John’s, so your donations do add up to a significant amount!  Now would be a great time to get started with Amazon Smile as the Christmas shopping season begins.  If you need any help getting started feel free to contact Pam Reimers or Pastor Cowell and they can help you through the process.

The Example of the Saints

Article XXI of the Augsburg Confession states that one particular blessing that the saints in heaven are to us is that:

the history of saints may be set before us so that we may follow the example of their faith and good works, according to our calling.  For example, the emperor may follow the example of David in making war to drive away the Turk from his country.  For both are kings.

What saint can be a good example of faith and good works according to your calling? Are you a farmer? How about Abraham, Isaac, or Jacob who faithfully tended many flocks. Are you a mother? How about Sarah, Hannah, or the Blessed Virgin Mary? Are you a teacher or leader? How about Moses? Find a saint in Scripture or from among your own friends or relatives and see what in their life of faith and good works can teach and inspire you toward being a faithful and fruitful Christian.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Apology of the Augsburg Confession, Article V: Love and Fulfilling the Law, para. 223-226

The Gospel is properly the command that directs us to believe that God is reconciled to us for Christ's sake. "For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him" (John 3:17). Whenever mercy is spoken of, faith in the promise must be added. This faith produces sure hope, because it relies upon God's Word and command. If hope would rely upon works, then it would be uncertain, because works cannot quiet the conscience. Faith makes a distinction between those who obtain salvation and those who do not obtain it. Faith makes the distinction between the worthy and the unworthy, because eternal life has been promised to the justified. Faith justifies.

LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Reformation Day)

Old Testament: Revelation 14:6-7

Epistle: Romans 3:19-28

Gospel: Matthew 11:12-19

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“Whoever has faith in God and Christ is righteous.” - Ambrosiaster, Commentary on Paul’s Epistles, qtd in ACCS, Romans, 103.

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

Article IV of the Augsburg Confession

Article IV of the Augsburg Confession has been called the chief doctrine of the Lutheran Church and the doctrine on which the Church either stands or falls.  This article of faith confesses that our righteousness before God is won for us by Christ alone and is obtained by us through faith alone.  Here is Ac IV:

[Our Churches, with common consent,] also teach that men cannot be justified before God by their own strength, merits, or works, but are freely justified for Christ's sake, through faith, when they believe that they are received into favor, and that their sins are forgiven for Christ's sake, who, by His death, has made satisfaction for our sins. This faith God imputes for righteousness in His sight. Rom. 3 and 4.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Apology of the Augsburg Confession, Article IV: Justification, paragraphs 31-34

John 8:36 says, "If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." Therefore, by reason we cannot be freed from sins and merit forgiveness of sins. In John 3:5, it is written, "Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God." But if it is necessary to be born again of the Holy Spirit, the righteousness of reason does not justify us before God and does not fulfill the Law. Romans 3:23 says, "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." They totally lack the wisdom and righteousness of God, which acknowledges and glorifies God. Romans 8:7-8 says, "The mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God." These testimonies are so clear that, they do not need a keen understanding, but only an attentive hearer. If the carnal mind is hostile against God, the flesh certainly does not love God. If it cannot be subject to God's Law, it cannot love God. If the carnal mind is hostile against God, the flesh sins, even when we do outward civil works. If it cannot be subject to God's Law, it certainly sins even when it has deeds that are excellent and praiseworthy according to human judgment. But the human heart without the Holy Spirit either feels secure and despises God's judgment, or in punishment flees from God and hates Him when He judges.

LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Feast of St. Luke)

Old Testament: Isaiah 35:5-8

Isaiah speaks of a coming highway in the desert that will be a road for the healed to walk.

Epistle: 2 Timothy 4:5-18

St. Paul mentions that Luke has stood by him in his ministry and imprisonment.

Gospel: Luke 10:1-9

Jesus sends seventy-two of His disciples out two by two in order to announce that the kingdom of God is at hand.

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“The Gospel [of Luke] was written to Theophilus, that is, to him whom God loves [Theophilus means loved by God in Greek].  If you love God, it was written to you.  If it was written to you, discharge the duty of an evangelist.  Diligently preserve the pledge of a friend in the secrets of the Spirit.” - St. Ambrose, Exposition of the Gospel of Luke, 1.12, qtd. in ACCS: Luke, 4.

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

St. Luke

On October 18th the Church celebrates the Feast of St. Luke.  Here is a note on St. Luke from the Treasury of Daily Prayer:

St. Luke, the beloved physician referred to by St. Paul (Colossians 4:14), presents us with Jesus, whose blood provides the medicine of immortality. As his traveling companion, Paul claimed Luke’s Gospel as his own for its healing of souls (Eusebius). Luke traveled with Paul during the second missionary journey, joining him after Paul received his Macedonian call to bring the Gospel to Europe (Acts 16:10-17). Luke most likely stayed behind in Philippi for seven years, rejoining Paul at the end of the third missionary journey in Macedonia. He traveled with Paul to Troas, Jerusalem, and Caesarea, where Paul was imprisoned for two years (Acts 20:5-21:18). While in Caesarea, Luke may have researched material that he used in his Gospel. Afterward, Luke accompanied Paul on his journey to Rome (Acts 27:1-28:16). Especially beloved in Luke’s Gospel are the stories of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:29-37), the prodigal son (Luke 16:19-31), and the Pharisee and the tax collector (Luke 2:1-20) and the canticles of Mary (Luke 1:46-55), of Zechariah (Luke 1:68-79), and of Simeon (Luke 2:29-32). To show how Christ continued His work in the Early Church through the apostles, Luke also penned the Acts of the Apostles. More than one-third of the New Testament comes from the hand of the evangelist Luke.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Augsburg Confession, Article XXI: Worship of the Saints, paragraphs 1-4

Our churches teach that the history of saints may be set before us so that we may follow the example of their faith and good works, according to our calling. For example, the emperor may follow the example of David (2 Samuel) in making war to drive away the Turk from his country. For both are kings. But Scripture does not teach that we are to call on the saints or to ask the saints for help. Scripture sets before us the one Christ as the Mediator, Atoning Sacrifice, High Priest, and Intercessor (1 Timothy 2:5-6). He is to be prayed to. He has promised that He will hear our prayer (John 14:13). This is the worship that He approved above all other worship, that He be called upon in all afflictions. “If anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father” (1 John 2:1).
