ST. JOHN’S NEWS

 

Flowers on the Altar today were given in memory of Pam Madsen by Donnie and family.

 

Pastor-elect Briton Nelson will be ordained and installed at Trinity on Sunday, June 25th at 4:00 p.m. A meal will follow the service.  His installation will be recognized at St. John’s on July 2nd during our morning Divine Service.  Please pray for Briton, his wife Jade, and one year old daughter Autumn as they make the transition to our community! - Please sign up on the back table if you plan to attend the ordination meal to help with our planning process.

 

Window Project -  The window project for replacement of 15 windows in the new addition - all Anderson windows, stained and installed, was voted and passed on Sunday, April 30, 2023 by the congregation.   The windows have been ordered this week.  When the contract was signed, we managed to get another $4,000 off the price as there was a better deal running for the month of May, so that saved us a total of $14,732.   Total due for the project is $58,932.  Anyone wishing to donate to this project can stipulate it on your offering envelope or drop an extra envelope in the plate with "window project" on it. Windows are projected to be in late September.    Thank you!  Church Counsel

 

Pastor Friedrich Ordination Celebration - Trinity Algona will be celebrating Pastor Henry Friedrich’s 70th anniversary of his ordination into the office of the Holy Ministry today. Pastor Mark Friedrich will be preaching at the Divine Service at 9:00 a.m. A reception will follow in the Life Center. 

 

Thank You!  We would like to thank everyone for your sympathy and kindness after the passing of Red.  It was all greatly appreciated.  We would especially like to thank Pastor Colwell for his many visits to see Red and for the beautiful service.  Also a big thank you to all of the ladies that helped serve the lunch the day of the funeral. God bless all of you, Doris, Steve, Sandi and families

 

Creation Museum/Ark Encounter Trip - Plans are underway for a group trip to the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter outside Cincinnati, Ohio.  If you are interested in attending, please see the information on the back table and turn in your sign-up form no later than Wednesday, May 31st.

 

Ordination Choir - Our Partnership will have a special choir for the ordination service on June 25th for Briton Nelson.  Anyone from St. John’s who wishes to be a part of this choir, please contact the office at Trinity (515-295-3518). Practice will be at Trinity on Sunday, June 11 at 9:15 am, Wednesday, June 21 at 7:00 pm, and Sunday, June 25 prior to the ordination service (probably around 3:20 pm).

 

 

Gift Card Shower for the Nelsons - Our Partnership is collecting local gift cards (gas, grocery, restaurant, etc.) for the Nelsons to help ease the burdens of moving and to welcome them into our community.  You can label your gift cards: “Nelsons” in the offering plate or turn them into the church office.  We will present these cards at the ordination reception. 

 

St. John’s Family Fishing Day - Our 2nd annual St. John’s family fishing day is Sunday, June 4, beginning at 3:00, with supper at 6:00, at the Smith Lake southwest shelter! This is Iowa’s free fishing weekend.  Bait and supper is provided and all ages are welcome to attend!

 

SYNOD, DISTRICT & PARTNERSHIP NEWS

 

Interested in learning Spanish? - We are exploring starting a group at Trinity to learn the basics of the Spanish language as a tool for serving our neighbor.  If you are interested in joining such a group, please contact Pastor Cowell or the church office. 

 

Trinity, Algona Family Lunch Wednesdays - Trinity is hosting "Family Lunch Wednesdays" in the Life Center June 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th, and July 12th and 19th.  Join us for a free meal and activity!  Lunch starts at 11:30 a.m. and activities conclude by 1:00 p.m.  All ages welcome; children must be accompanied by an adult. 

 

TLC Quilters 

·         Available - Don’t forget about the TLC Quilter’s “giving pew” by the east doors of St. John’s.  Feel free to take and give away as many quilts and bears as you’d like!  

·         Old Tattered Quilts Needed! Well-loved quilts can be repurposed into prayer hearts to provide comfort for others. 

·         Old Denim Jeans? We are in need of old denim jeans (any color & any condition) to make into quilts. Bring them to the church office or stop by the basement on Tuesdays or Thursdays to see them in action!

 

Camp Okoboji

·         Kids Kamp is for grades K- 2nd Grade and families and is scheduled for June 2nd-4th. This Kamp is a perfect weekend to get your child acclimated to camp. Camp Okoboji is where you and your child can experience canoeing, swimming, arts and crafts, Bible studies, campfire devotions and so much “S”more!! A special scholarship fund has been made available to help with registration for all Kids’ Kamp attendees! Call camp at 712-337-3325 for information.

COMMUNITY NEWS

 

Burt VFW Memorial Service will be held at the Burt Complex at 10 a.m. with the march to the cemetery to follow. Coffee and rolls will be served at 9:00 a.m. before the service.  There will be no lunch served this year.

Confirmation - We celebrate the rite of Confirmation for Caelum Blocker, son of Doris and Michael Blocker, today! Caelum’s confirmation verse is: 

Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the Lord God is my strength and my song, and He has become my salvation.” - Isaiah 12:2.  All are invited to a reception in the basement following the service.

Window Project -  The window project for replacement of 15 windows in the new addition - all Anderson windows, stained and installed, was voted and passed on Sunday, April 30, 2023 by the congregation.   The windows have been ordered this week.  When the contract was signed, we managed to get another $4,000 off the price as there was a better deal running for the month of May, so that saved us a total of $14,732.   Total due for the project is $58,932.  Anyone wishing to donate to this project can stipulate it on your offering envelope or drop an extra envelope in the plate with "window project" on it. Camp Okoboji is where you and your child can experience canoeing, swimming, arts and crafts, Bible studies, campfire devotions and so much “S”more!! A special scholarship fund has been made available to help with registration for all Kids’ Kamp attendees! Call camp at 712-337-3325 for information.

·         The Camp Okoboji Auxiliary says thank you to all who participated in helping to raise money for the new playground.  Thank you, also, to an anonymous donor who created a matching fund that would donate $20,000 for the playground if the Auxiliary could raise $40,000.  More than the $40,000 was received.  It could not have been done without each of you.  Work on the new playground will begin this spring and plans are to finish it before the Summer Season 2024.

Burt Library has the Story Time-to-Go Bags for the easy grab and go program. Each backpack contains three or four books, imagination and play items, an easy craft and a card with songs, rhymes, games.  Grab the bag and take it home. Library hours: Monday 9-12:00 p.m. and 1-6 p.m., Wednesday & Friday 12:00-6:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:30 -11:30 a.m.

Block Party on Thursday, May 11, 2023 - 4:30-6:00 p.m. This is a fundraiser at the Loving Hands Nursery located at the Methodist Church in Algona.  Play blocks for sale donated by the “Chips Off the Old Block.
