Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Collect of the DayAlmighty God, You show mercy to Your people in all their troubles. Grant us always to recognize Your goodness, give thanks for Your compassion, and praise Your holy name; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Share the Blessing Letters are in your bulletins boxes this morning.

Adult Bible Study - Our Sunday morning adult Bible study class is discussing the God-given character of man and woman as described in the Bible.  We'll also occasionally reference Pastor Jeffrey Hemmer's book, Man Up! The Quest for Masculinity.  Talk to Pastor Cowell if you are interested in purchasing a copy of the book.

Kids of the Kingdom Preschool Board is having a Thank You Coffee in the church basement on Sunday, October 20 after the voters meeting.  Please join us as we thank all of you for all of your years of support and reminisce about all of the fun times we had.

LWML Mites – The pulpit side wins! The pulpit side collected $151 and the lectern side collected $115. Thank you to all for your participation and support. See the back table for the list of mercy and mission projects the LWML mite money supports.

Quarterly Council Meeting will be held today following the service.  The voter’s meeting is Sunday, October 20th.

Mission Support Updates about Lutherans in Africa and the Gate Lutheran Church are available on the back table.

Membership Updates - There is a letter on the back table with a list of out-of-the-area members who we are going to vote to remove at our October 20th Voters meeting.  Ask Pastor or an Elder if you have any further questions after reading the letter.  Keep in mind that our removal of these people from our membership does not say anything about their faith.  Rather, their removal communicates our congregation's inability to claim responsibility for caring for their faith.  Any of these removed members who continue to confess the faith of our Lutheran Confessions are welcome to receive the Lord's Supper with us when they visit.

Algona Circuit Reformation Hymn-Sing - Join the congregations of the Algona Circuit of Iowa District West for our Reformation hymn-sing! The event will be held Sunday, October 27th at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Algona.  During the hymn-sing you’ll get the chance to hear some of the history and theology behind the great hymns of the Lutheran Reformation as well as enjoy singing them with our brothers and sisters in Christ from around the area.  Local musician Glenn Henriksen will be our organist for the event.  We will enjoy refreshments and social time in the Trinity Life Center following the hymn-sing.

Funeral Planning Workshop - I know you are all dying to attend a funeral planning workshop, but let me tell you why you should attend!  Your funeral is an opportunity to leave your family with a confident and comforting confession of your faith in Jesus and your hope in the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.  This is why we encourage you to work with your pastor to choose your own Scripture readings and hymns for your funeral service.  For obvious reasons these selections must be made before the day of your funeral... so what better time than our Partnership Funeral Planning Workshop!  The event will be Saturday, Nov. 16th at the Trinity Life Center with breakfast at 8:30 a.m. and the workshop beginning at 9:00 a.m.  Pastors Cowell and Schlund will lead us in examining our Christian understanding of life, death, and resurrection and offer advice on Scripture and hymn choices for the funeral service.  Jayme Lentz will also be there to provide some practical advice on pre-planning funeral details with a funeral home.  All ages are encouraged to attend.

Burt Trunk or Treat - Join us Halloween night (Oct. 31st) for Trunk or Treat in Burt! The event will be held at the Burt Presbyterian parking lot from 5:00-6:30 p.m. We’ll have trunks full of candy, games, pumpkin painting, popcorn, cider, and hot chocolate. This event is hosted by the churches of Burt.

- If you, your family, business or organization would like to host a car (decorate your car/trunk/tailgate and hand out candy), please contact Hannah Cowell (call/text: 712-294-4962; email: cowellh222@gmail.com).

Lectionary Summary: The Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost - Ruth 1:1–19a; 2 Timothy 2:1–13; Luke 17:11–19

Faith Returns Thanks to God and Worships Him in the Person of Christ Jesus

Jesus comes in mercy and, by His Word, heals you in body and soul. “Go and show yourselves to the priests,” for you are cleansed (Luke 17:14), and you are granted access to the Lord’s temple. It is at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks” (Luke 17:16), that you worship God, for Christ Jesus is your great High Priest; His body is the true temple. In Him, you “find rest, each of you in the house of her husband” (Ruth 1:9), for the Lord has “visited his people and given them food” (Ruth 1:6). The person of Jesus Christ lodges Himself in holy food — bread and wine for believers to eat and drink. You lodge where Jesus lodges; His Father is your God, His people are your people. Death cannot part you from Him because His death and resurrection are eternally yours through Holy Baptism. “Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead” (2 Tim. 2:8). As surely as death could not hold Him, so surely “the word of God is not bound” (2 Tim. 2:9). His Gospel is entrusted “to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also” (2 Tim. 2:2), so that you “may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus” (2 Tim. 2:10). Such is the confession of faith for all the saints, who believe, teach and confess the one Lord and Savior — Jesus Christ.  - lcms.org/worship/lectionary-summaries
