Building Healthy Families:  Many of us grew up learning to be tough and to never ask for help. But through the many trials of recent years, we have found that if we ask for help, we can get it from our friends, family, pastors and others. When you are in need, don’t try to be the Lone Ranger. God has placed numerous people in your life to help you. Remember Paul’s admonition: “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2 When you allow others to care for you, you’re giving them an opportunity to grow in their relationship to Christ. LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Proper 13)

Old Testament: Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12-14: 2:18-26

King Solomon reflects on how the work of our hands is a mere breath.

Epistle: Colossians 3:1-11

“Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.”

Gospel: Luke 12:13-21

Jesus tells the parable of the rich fool.

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

[Jesus said to the brother in Luke 12:13-14:] “‘Tell me, man, who has appointed me a judge of the inheritance among you? I have come to gather, not to scatter.’ He said, ‘I say to you, guard against all greed.’ Greed wants to divide, just as love desires to gather.” - Augustine, Sermon 265.9, qtd. in ACCS: Luke, 207.

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

The Sign of the Cross

The making of the sign of the cross by touching your head, heart, and shoulders is perhaps the oldest rubric in the history of the Christian Church, likely dating to the times of the apostles themselves.  Every time you cross yourself you are retracing the sign first made upon you at your Baptism, thus bringing to mind the gifts of the forgiveness, life, and salvation of Christ’s cross given to you there in water and word.  Look for places in the liturgy such as the Invocation, Absolution, Creed, Sacrament, and Benediction where you can trace this reminder of your Baptism on yourself.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Solid Declaration of the Formula of Concord, Article VI: Third Use of God’s Law, para. 22-25

Although in this life the good works of believers are imperfect and impure because of sin in the flesh, nevertheless they are acceptable and well pleasing to God. The Gospel teaches that our spiritual offerings are acceptable to God through faith for Christ's sake. In this way Christians are not under the Law, but under grace. For by faith in Christ the persons are freed from the Law's curse and condemnation. They act not by coercion of the Law, but by the renewing of the Holy Spirit, voluntarily and spontaneously from their hearts. However, they still have a constant struggle against the old Adam.

The old Adam is still a part of them. It must be forced to obey Christ. It not only requires the teaching, admonition, force, and threatening of the Law, but it also often needs the club of punishments and troubles. This goes on until the body of sin is entirely put off and a person is perfectly renewed in the resurrection. Then he will need neither the preaching of the Law nor its threats, just as he will no longer need the Gospel. These belong to this imperfect life. Just as people will see God face-to-face, so they will—through the power of God's indwelling Spirit—do the will of God with unmingled joy, voluntarily, unconstrained, without any hindrance, and with entire purity and perfection. They will rejoice in it eternally.

Building Healthy Families: Know anyone who struggles with perfectionism…perhaps you? Although motivated by a desire for good, perfectionism has been aptly described as a fast and enduring track to unhappiness. Whether it’s your chaotic system of storing tax receipts, the disorder in your workshop or hobby room, or the messiness of your life in general, give yourself a break and remember this good news: You are saved by grace, not by works. The pressure is off. Always do your best but don’t let a mistake or an error or a bad habit define you. “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus….” (Romans 8:1-2) Lutheran Family Service - www.LutheranFamilyService.org.

LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Proper 12)

Old Testament: Genesis 18:17-33

Abraham pleads to the Lord for the sake of the righteous remaining in Sodom.

Epistle: Colossians 2:6-19

Jesus is the head of all rule and authority, who has canceled the record of debt that stood against us.

Gospel: Luke 11:1-13

Jesus teaches His disciples the Lord’s Prayer.

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“‘Our Father, who art in heaven.’ What does this mean? With these words God tenderly invites us to believe that He is our true Father and that we are His true children, so that with all boldness and confidence we may ask Him as dear children ask their dear father.” - Martin Luther, Small Catechism, Lord’s Prayer, The Introduction.

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

Hands at Prayer

The Church doesn’t know exactly how we came to fold our hands during prayer.  The important thing is that when we pray our hands are resting hands.  These resting hands are hands of faith.  As we fold our hands together and put them to rest we direct our eyes and hearts to the nail-marked hands of Jesus.  These crucified hands of Jesus are always the answer to our prayers.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Solid Declaration of the Formula of Concord, Article XI: Election, paragraphs 83-86

God punishes sin with sins. This means that because of their self-confidence, lack of repentance, and willful sins, He later punishes with hard-heartedness and blindness those who had been converted. This punishment should not be interpreted to mean that it never had been God's good pleasure that such persons should come to know the truth and be saved. For both these facts are God's revealed will:

1. God will receive into grace all who repent and believe in Christ.

2. He also will punish those who willfully turn away from the holy commandment and entangle themselves in the world's filth, decorate their hearts for Satan, and despise God's Spirit. They will be hardened, blinded, and eternally condemned if they persist in such things. Even Pharaoh perished in this way. This was not because God had begrudged him salvation.

God caused His Word to be preached and His will to be proclaimed to Pharaoh. Nevertheless, Pharaoh willfully stood up against all rebukes and warnings. Therefore, God withdrew from him, Pharaoh's heart became hardened, and God executed His judgment on him. For he was guilty of hellfire. The holy apostle also introduces the example of Pharaoh to prove God's justice by it, which He exercises toward the unrepentant despisers of His Word.

LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Proper 11)

Old Testament: Genesis 18:1-14

The Lord appears to Abraham as three men by the oaks of Mamre and promises that Sarah will bear a son.

Epistle: Colossians 1:21-29

Paul toils to proclaim the gospel to the Gentiles.

Gospel: Luke 10:38-42

Jesus visits the house of Mary and Martha. Martha was distracted with much serving, while Mary sat at the feet of Jesus and listened to His teaching.

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“Do not let service divert the knowledge of the heavenly Word. … Nor is Martha rebuked in her good serving, but Mary is preferred because she has chosen the better part for herself, for Jesus abounds with many blessings and bestows many gifts. And therefore the wiser chooses what she perceives as foremost.” - Ambrose, Exposition of the Gospel of Luke 7.85-86, qtd. in ACCS: Luke, p. 182-183

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Solid Declaration of the Formula of Concord, Article II: Free Will, paragraphs 51-54

The eternal Father calls down from heaven about His dear Son (Matthew 17:5) and about all who preach repentance and forgiveness of sins in His name, "Listen to Him".

All who want to be saved ought to listen to this preaching. For the preaching and hearing of God's Word are the Holy Spirit's instruments. By, with, and through these instruments the Spirit desires to work effectively, to convert people to God, and to work in them both to will and to do.

A person can hear and read this Word outwardly, even though he is not yet converted to God and regenerate. As said above, a person even since the fall has a free will to a certain extent in these outward things. So he can go to church and listen or not listen to the sermon.

God works through this means (i.e., the preaching and hearing of His Word). He breaks our hearts and draws us to Him. Through the preaching of the Law, a person comes to know his sins and God's wrath. He experiences in his heart true terrors, contrition, and sorrow. Through the preaching of, and reflection on, the Holy Gospel about the gracious forgiveness of sins in Christ, a spark of faith is kindled in him. This faith accepts the forgiveness of sins for Christ's sake and comforts itself with the Gospel promise. So the Holy Spirit is sent into the heart.

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“God our Lord wished to be called our neighbor. The Lord Jesus Christ meant that he was the one who gave help to the man lying half-dead on the road, beaten and left by the robbers.  The prophet said in prayer, ‘As a neighbor and as one’s own brother, so did I please [Psalm 34:14].’ Since the divine nature is far superior and above our human nature, the command by which we are to love God is distinct from our love of our neighbor. He shows mercy to us because of his own goodness, while we show mercy to one another because of God’s goodness. He has compassion on us so that we may enjoy him completely, while we have compassion on another that we may completely enjoy him.” - Augustine, Christian Instruction 33, qtd. in ACCS: Luke, p. 181

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Epitome of the Formula of Concord, Article VI: The Third Use of God’s Law, para. 1-3

The Law was given to people for three reasons: (1) that by the Law outward discipline might be maintained against wild, disobedient people; (2) that people may be led to the knowledge of their sins by the Law; and (3) that after they are regenerate and ‹much of› the flesh still cleaves to them, they might on this account have a fixed rule according to which they are to regulate and direct their whole life. A dissension has arisen between a few theologians about the third use of the Law, namely, whether it is to be taught to regenerate Christians. One side has said Yes; the other, No.

     1. We believe, teach, and confess that, even though people who are truly believing ‹in Christ› and truly converted to God have been freed and exempted from the curse and coercion of the Law, they are still not without the Law on this account. They have been redeemed by God's Son in order that they may exercise themselves in the Law day and night. Even our first parents before the fall did not live without Law. They had God's Law written into their hearts, because they were created in God's image.

     2. We believe, teach, and confess that the preaching of the Law is to be encouraged diligently. This applies not only for the unbelieving and impenitent, but also for true believers, who are truly converted, regenerate, and justified through faith.
