The 500th Anniversary of the ReformationReading God’s Word in the year to come

500th Anniversary of the Reformation will be celebrated next year in our Church Body.  There will be many things coming out in the year to come as we remember the blessing that God gave to us through Martin Luther 500 years ago.  One of the many things that we have to express our faith and to remain faithful to God is in His Word.  I am encouraging each of you to join me this coming year as we start reading the Bible in one year beginning with Reformation this year. On the back table in the church you will find a reading list you can take and put in your bible as you read along.  May God bless us this coming year as we together see the blessings that God gives to us as we read His Word.   Pastor Reimers

Schedule of Services – Be sure to check the Messenger for the next two months.  Information is in there about the up-coming services at St. John’s during the holiday seasons.  Also, information on new date and time of the Thanksgiving Service is in the November calendar.

Camp Okoboji News – What is Happening at Your Camp?  Informational Sheets are on the table in the back on all the schedule of Events coming to Camp, Progress Information on the new construction with the Laborers for Christ workers on Site and working hard and an Omelet Breakfast Fundraiser being held on November 6th. We are also beginning the fundraising for the 2nd Stage of our Discover  Campaign Project. Pick up a flier on the back table!

Did You Know 4,677 married couples divorced in Iowa last year. That’s one divorce for every 4 marriages. While most divorces occurred 5-9 years into marriage, the shortest marriage ending in divorce at 87 days. We know that pre-marriage counseling and marriage education help marriages last, even when things get rough. LFS counselors provide these helpful resources for Iowa couples who plan to marry, as well as reconciliation counseling for couples in conflict who may be considering divorce. Your financial gifts help us serve couples regardless of their income or ability to pay. Thank you and may God bless our work to support and strengthen Iowa marriages! Lutheran Family Service

Stewardship Corner - In Ephesians 4:28, we read, “Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.”  The Apostle Paul is telling us that our sinful lives are to be abandoned and that we are to work hard  not only to provide for our needs but to “share with anyone in need.”  To be able to work and make an income is a gift from God, and He gives us, through the work of the Holy Spirit, new hearts that want to share with others.  In contrast, our society encourages us to make as much as we can so we can live for ourselves by using what we earn to live in new and better homes and drive newer and nicer cars.  May God grant us the desire to work hard in order to experience the joy in sharing what we earn with others.

Autumn FestBurt Summer Celebration Committee will be hosting an Autumn Celebration on Saturday, October 29th from 4-6 p.m. Join us for vegetable beef stew made over an open fire and be sure to buy your $5.00 ticket for Chicken Chip Bingo.  There will also be hayrides around town and Pumpkin painting.  Help us keep our Summer Celebration a free day!  This will be held at the Burt Community Center.

Did You Know - 30,000. That’s how many babies are now available right now to join families through adoption if only they could be matched with adopting parents. These tiny humans exist today in the form of frozen embryos who are ready to be donated by their biological parents to couples seeking to adopt. Realizing that life begins at the moment of conception and all life is precious in the sight of God, LFS offers embryo adoption as a life-giving action of love in this age of modern technology. LFS partners with Snowflake Embryo Adoption to place babies as embryos with Iowa couples who meet our adoption requirements and successfully complete a home study. Call LFS and visit www.embryoadoption.org to learn more and share this information today with a couple you know who might be interested in adoption!  Lutheran Family Services

Building Healthy Families - From the newborn infant to the hospice patient at death’s door and all of us in between, the physical touch of another person is critically important. Even when they receive nourishment, infants who aren’t touched die from Failure to Thrive Syndrome. For adults, physical touch can reduce anxiety and lower blood pressure. In today’s crazy, fearful and politically correct world, we avoid the touch we need more than ever before. How long has it been since you held another person’s hand, placed your arm around someone’s shoulder or given or received a big bear hug?   Lutheran Family Services

What would you guess was their answer…more time together?...more money?…more vacations? All wrong. The kids’ number one wish was that their parents would be less tired and less stressed.
