ST. JOHN’S NEWS

 

A Volunteer is needed to pull the float at the Burt Summer Celebration parade on Saturday, July 8 at 10:30 a.m. Contact the church office.

 

Church Basement will be closed for the floors to be cleaned and waxed the week of July 10 - July 14. 

 

St. John’s Day at the Pool Party!  Sunday July 9th from 2-5 p.m. Come and join us for an afternoon of swimming at the Bancroft Swimming Pool. If you are not a swimmer, snacks and games will be at the park as well. Bring your lawn chairs and plan on an afternoon of fun!  At 5 p.m. meet in the park next to the pool for devotions and lessons with a meal immediately following. 

·         A sign-up sheet is available on the back table if you would be willing to bring a pan of bars or cookies to share.

 

Window Project -  The window project for replacement of 15 windows in the new addition - all Anderson windows, stained and installed, was voted and passed on Sunday, April 30, 2023 by the congregation.   The windows have been ordered this week.  When the contract was signed, we managed to get another $4,000 off the price as there was a better deal running for the month of May, so that saved us a total of $14,732.   Total due for the project is $58,932.  Anyone wishing to donate to this project can stipulate it on your offering envelope or drop an extra envelope in the plate with "window project" on it. Windows are projected to be in late September.    Thank you!  Church Counsel

 

Retiring from the MinistryGod said in Jeremiah 3:15 – “Then I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will lead you with knowledge and understanding.”  After 30 years serving the Lord, Pastor Russell Reimers will be giving his last sermon at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Wilbert, MN. on Sunday, July 16, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. with lunch to follow from 11:30 a.m. till 1:00 p.m.  A program led by the congregation and local pastors will start at 1:30 p.m.  Everyone is invited to join in on the celebration as Pastor Reimers will move into his next phase of life serving the Lord on a part-time basis.  Those wishing to send cards can mail them to Pastor Russell Reimers; 1009 Day Street; Fairmont, MN 56031-4330.  

 

The July-September Portals of Prayer are now available on the back table along the east wall.

 

Adult Bible Study will resume Sunday, July 16th at 8:00!

Trinity VBS - God’s Living Wateris July 23–27 this year from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Go to trinityalgona.org/vbs for more info. and registration. 

 

Interested in learning Spanish? - We are exploring starting a group at Trinity to learn the basics of the Spanish language as a tool for serving our neighbor. There will be an informational meeting on Wednesday, July 12 at 6 pm in the Trinity Life Center conference room for anyone interested.

 

Trinity, Algona Family Lunch Wednesdays - Trinity is hosting "Family Lunch Wednesdays" in the Life Center July 12th and 19th.  Join us for a free meal and activity!  Lunch starts at 11:30 a.m. and activities conclude by 1:00 p.m. All ages welcome; children must be accompanied by an adult. 

 

Ark Encounter/Creation Museum Trip - For those still interested, we have the opportunity to join an already scheduled bus tour, and although there are no minimum sign-up requirements, seats will fill up, so reservations should be made in a timely manner. This trip is planned for Oct 9-13 (Mon – Fri), and the bus will load in Fort Dodge. A sign-up sheet and informational flier are available on the back table. TLC Quilters 

·         Available - Don’t forget about the TLC Quilter’s “giving pew” by the east doors of St. John’s.  Feel free to take and give away as many quilts and bears as you’d like!  

·         Old Tattered Quilts Needed! Well-loved quilts can be repurposed into prayer hearts to provide comfort for others. 

·         Old Denim Jeans? We are in need of old denim jeans (any color & any condition) to make into quilts. Bring them to the church office or stop by the basement on Tuesdays or Thursdays to see them in action!

 

Camp Okoboji

·         Okoboji Travel Camp - September 6-10, 2023: Camp Okoboji is planning a bus trip to Branson, Missouri. Brochures about the trip and registration forms are on the back table.

 

COMMUNITY NEWS

 

Burt Summer Celebration will be held on Saturday, July 8. Plans are being made for all day activities, including Coffee/coffee cake at 7:00-9:00 a.m., garage sales, parade at 10:30 a.m. and a meal will be served following the parade at the Complex. Many many activities are scheduled for the afternoon and evening.  The evening will conclude with fireworks by the Burt Fire Dept. at 10:00 p.m.  



·         St. John’s Burt is responsible for 3 coffee cakes for the church coffee and rolls at the Burt Celebration at 7 a.m. If you could bring a coffee cake for this, please contact Karla Schutter.

 

A Card Shower is being held for Beverly Bolte (mother of Deb Steven) who is celebrating her 90th birthday on July 7th. Cards can be sent to Beverly Bolte, 5611 340th St.,  Cylinder, Iowa 50528.

Pastor-elect Briton Nelson will be ordained and installed at Trinity today at 4:00 p.m. A meal will follow the service.  His installation will be recognized at St. John’s on July 2nd during our morning Divine Service.  Please pray for Briton, his wife Jade, and one year old daughter Autumn as they make the transition to our community!

Ordination Choir - Our Partnership will have a special choir for the ordination service on June 25th for Briton Nelson.  Anyone from St. John’s who wishes to be a part of this choir, please contact the office at Trinity (515-295-3518). Kitty will be helping St. John’s members with the practices here.  Contact her on the times of those practices.  We will have a joint practice at Trinity Sunday, June 25 prior to the ordination service (probably around 3:20 p.m).

 

Gift Card Shower for the Nelsons - Our Partnership is collecting local gift cards (gas, grocery, restaurant, etc.) for the Nelsons to help ease the burdens of moving and to welcome them into our community.  You can label your gift cards: “Nelsons” and put them in the offering plate or turn them into the church office.  We will present these cards at the ordination reception. 

 

Bridal Shower for Megan Mixer, bride-to-be of Wade Briggs will be held here at St. John’s on Saturday, June 24, 2023 from 9-11 a.m. Everyone is welcome!

A big thank you  to all who came out and enjoyed the afternoon fishing at Smith Lake.  No big catches, but all had a good time!  Special thanks to the Board of Education, Karla and Brenda for all their hard work.  Our next event will be an afternoon of Swimming on Sunday, July 9.  More information to come later.

Camp Okoboji

·         Camp Okoboji Quilt Auction will be Saturday, June 17 at 12:30 pm. View quilts Friday, June 16, 5-7 pm & Saturday, June 17, 9am-noon. Free-will Lunch & Craft Fair is at 11 am. Bids can be submitted to the camp office if unable to attend. Proceeds go toward the playground renovation. View quilts online at campokojobi.org 

·         The camp Okoboji Auxiliary thanks you for your gift designated to the New Ark Theme Playground. The full available matching funds have been received. By God’s Blessings, the project has started this spring and will be completed next fall. Praise God for the wonderful blessing this new playground will be ! Many many activities are scheduled for the afternoon and evening.  The evening will conclude with Fireworks by the Burt Fire Dept. at 10:00 p.m.  

Day Camp - Burt Library along with other libraries in county are hosting a day camp event at Smith Lake for kids entering 1st through 7th grade. This will be a day filled with activities, programs and crafts. Walking tacos and root beer floats for lunch. Bus transportation to and from each library by the Algona School System.  Registration is required by Monday, June 12  at the Burt Library 515-924-3680.
