Portals of Prayer for October-December are now available along the east wall in the back.

Worship by Phone - Beginning October 24th, if you would like to receive the audio of the worship service on Sunday through your phone, you will need to dial area code 515 along with the worship-by-phone number of 924-4444, even if you are calling locally. This change is due to a new rule requiring all numbers in the 515 area code to add the area code to all local calls.

Service Livestream Operator Informational Meeting - If you have any interest in assisting with the weekly setup of our service livestreams at St. John’s, or would simply like to learn how to set up a video livestream, please plan to attend a short meeting Sunday, October 24 after church in the church basement.

Flocknote Prayer Chain Coordinator Wanted - St. John’s is looking for a volunteer to be our Flocknote Prayer Chain coordinator.  This volunteer would be responsible for scheduling (in advance) our daily prayer text messages, including creating prayers submitted by members and prayers in light of various contemporary events.  While the volunteer should be comfortable operating the basic functions of a computer, the Flocknote program is very easy to work with and Pastor Cowell will give you a step-by-step training for how to schedule the prayers.  You can expect the time commitment for this position to be around 1-2 hours a month.  Please speak with Pastor Cowell if you are interested in helping in this way.

Quarterly Council Meeting will be held Sunday, October 10, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. The Voter’s Meeting will be held Sunday, October 17, 2021 following the service.

Did You Know: About 70% of the world is covered by oceans! You may have seen the ocean up close, flown over it, or seen pictures. God speaks of his love and forgiveness in relation to the depths of the sea. The next time you see a picture of or visit the ocean, consider this verse, and remember completely you are loved: “You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.” Micah 7:19 Lutheran Family Service - www.LutheranFamilyService.org.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Life Chain Sunday - Kossuth County Right to Life invites you to join them today from 2:00-3:00 p.m. for the Algona LIFE CHAIN.  Participants will quietly stand or sit at the corner of State Street and Jones Street in Algona with signs in support of the unborn.  The group will meet in front of Louscher’s Dental Clinic parking lot at 1:30 p.m. to hand out signs and find a place to stand/sit.  If you would like more information about Kossuth County Right to Life, you can contact Jim Lauer at 515-782 3749, or search Kossuth County Right to Life on Facebook.

Trunk-or-Treat - The Churches of Burt will be hosting a trunk-or-treat in the Presbyterian parking lot in conjunction with the town of Burt's trick-or-treating night: Saturday, October 30 from 5:00-7:00.  The trunk-or-treat will feature candy, a meal you can either sit down and eat or take to-go, and other fun activities.  If you would like to host a trunk or volunteer in any way, please text or call Hannah Cowell at 712-294-4962.

LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Proper 22)

Old Testament: Genesis 2:18-25

God creates woman from man’s rib to be a helper fit for him.

Epistle: Hebrews 2:1-18

Jesus is both the Son of God and our brother in the flesh, and is able to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

Gospel: Mark 10:2-16

Jesus teaches about divorce and about the place of children in the kingdom of God.

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“‘For a woman is bound, as long as her husband is alive.’ As a consequence, therefore, the husband is also bound, as long as his wife is alive. This bond renders any further union impossible without the implication of adultery.” - Augustine, Adulterous Marriages, 2.9.8, qtd. in ACCS: Mark, 136.

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

What is the Bible?

The Bible gathers together the writings of God’s chosen prophets and apostles over a period of more than a thousand years.  Through the Holy Spirit, God Himself gave these writers the thoughts and words they recorded (verbal inspiration), such that the Bible is God’s Word.  For this reason, the Scriptures are both infallible (incapable of error) and inerrant (containing no mistakes).  Holy Scripture is therefore entirely reliable and gives us everything we need to know and believe for Christian faith and life.  See Hebrews 1:1-2; Ephesians 2:19-20; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:21. - An Explanation of the Small Catechism (2017), p. 46-47

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Large Catechism, Preface, paragraphs 4-5, 7-8

What would be achieved if we were as negligent and lazy as we were under the papacy?

To this laziness such preachers add the shameful vice and secret infection of security and contentment. In other words, Many see the catechism as a poor, common teaching, which they can read through once and immediately understand. They can throw the book into a corner and be ashamed to read it again.

But I say this: I am also a doctor and preacher; yes, as learned and experienced as all the people who have such assumptions. Yet I act as a child who is being taught the catechism. Every morning - and whenever I have time - I read and say, word for word, the Ten Commandments, the Creed, the Lord's Prayer, the Psalms, and such. I must still read and study them daily. Yet I cannot master the catechism as I wish. But I must remain a child and pupil of the catechism, and am glad to remain so. Yet these delicate, refined fellows would in one reading promptly become doctors above all doctors, know everything, and need nothing. Well, this, too, is a sure sign that they despise both their office and the souls of the people. Indeed, they even despise God and His Word. They do not have to fall. They have already fallen all too horribly. They need to become children and begin to learn their alphabet, which they imagine they have long outgrown [Mark 10:15].

LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Proper 21)

Old Testament: Numbers 11:4-6, 10-16, 24-29

The Lord appointed seventy elders to lead Israel under Moses, and put some of the Spirit that was on Moses onto the seventy elders.

Epistle: James 5:1-20

Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.

Gospel: Mark 9:38-50

Jesus teaches: “The one who is not against us is for us. For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ will by no means lose his reward.”

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“God never asks his servants to do what is impossible. The love and goodness of his Godhead is revealed as richly available. It is poured out like water upon all. God furnishes to each person according to his will the ability to do something good. None of those seeking to be saved will be lacking in this ability, given by the one who said: ‘whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose his reward.’” - Gregory of Nyssa, On the Christian Mode of Life, qtd. in ACCS: Mark, 130.

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

The Stole

Like many of the vestments of the church, the origins and original purpose of the stole is complicated.  However there is much that we can learn from its use among pastors today.  The stole distinguishes its wearer as one called to the office of the holy ministry.  When a pastor wears a stole he gives you confidence that he is the man who has been called by God to deliver God’s gifts to you.  Also, the stole happens to look like a yoke.  Your pastor has been yoked by Christ for service to his people.  Therefore the words and actions of the pastor are never his own, but Christ’s words and deeds which the pastor delivers to you.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Large Catechism, Ten Commandments, paragraphs 324-326

"You shall have no other gods before Me" [Ex. 20:3], in its simplest meaning states nothing other than this demand: You shall fear, love, and trust in Me as your only true God. All Scriptures have everywhere preached and taught the First Commandment, aiming always at these two things: fear of God and trust in Him. The prophet David especially does this throughout the Psalms, as when he says "the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him, in those who hope in His steadfast love" [Ps. 147:11]. He writes as if the entire commandment were explained by one verse, as if to say, "The Lord takes pleasure in those who have no other gods."

So the First Commandment is to shine and give its splendor to all the others. Therefore, you must let this declaration run through all the commandments. It is like a hoop in a wreath, joining the end to the beginning and holding them all together. Let it be continually repeated and not forgotten, as the Second Commandment says, so that we fear God and do not take His name in vain for cursing, lying, deceiving, and other ways of leading men astray, or trickery. But we make proper and good use of His name by calling upon Him in prayer, praise, and thanksgiving, derived from love and trust according to the First Commandment. In the same way such fear, love, and trust is to drive and force us not to despise His Word, but gladly to learn it, hear it, value it holy, and honor it.

LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Proper 20)

Old Testament: Jeremiah 11:18-20

“I was like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter. I did not know it was against me they devised schemes, saying, “Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, let us cut him off from the land of the living.”

Epistle:  James 3:13-4:10

Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.

Gospel: Mark 9:30-37

Jesus places a child in the midst of the disciples and says: “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.”

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“Observe a tree, how it first tends downwards, that it may then shoot forth upwards. It fastens its root low in the ground that it may send forth its top toward heaven. Is it not from humility that it endeavors to rise? But without humility it will not attain to higher things.” - Augustine, The Gospel of John, Sermon 38, qtd. in ACCS: Mark, 126-127.

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

The Cassock and Surplice

The black gown that Pastor wears is called a cassock.  The white garment on top of it is a surplice.  There is a long and complicated history as to how pastors came to wear the cassock and surplice, but these vestments also teach two simple lessons.  Notice how the white vestment covers the black, just as the righteousness of Christ covers our sin in Baptism.  Notice also that when Pastor is wearing his vestments you can only see his head and his hands.  In this way you are drawn to focus on his head (particularly his mouth) which proclaims God’s Word to you and his hands which deliver God’s Sacraments and blessing to you.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

The Power and Primacy of the Pope, paragraphs 7-9

We will show from the Gospel that the Roman bishop is not above other bishops and pastors by divine right.

     I. Christ clearly bans lordship among the apostles. This was the very question: When Christ spoke of His passion, the apostles were disputing over who should be the head of the others, and, as it were, the vicar of the absent Christ. Christ rebukes this error of the apostles and teaches that there shall not be lordship or superiority among them. Instead, the apostles would be sent forth as equals to the common ministry of the Gospel. So, He says, "The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves" (Luke 22:25-26).

II. When Christ, places a little child in their midst, He is teaching the same thing by parable. Just as a child neither takes nor seeks sovereignty for himself, so this shows that there is not to be sovereignty among ministers.

III. Christ sends forth His disciples without any distinction . He says, "As the Father has sent Me, even so I am sending you." He says that He sends them individually in the same way He Himself was sent [John 12:44-50]. He grants no one a privilege or lordship above the rest.

Building Healthy Families - “He’s got the whole world in His hands, He’s got the whole world in His hands…” Do you recall the words to this Sunday School song? It’s more than just a fun song. This song speaks truth about how much God loves us and is in control – even during uncertain times like we’re living in today. Be assured: He has not forgotten or abandoned you. “This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.” I John 4:9 Lutheran Family Service - www.LutheranFamilyService.org.

LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Proper 19)

Old Testament:  Isaiah 50:4-10

“The Lord God has given me [Isaiah] the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary.”

Epistle:  James 3:1-12

No human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God.

Gospel: Mark 9:14-29

Jesus casts a demon out of a father’s son after the disciples were unable to do so.

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

[Speaking on Mark 9:21: “Jesus said, ‘How long has the child had this evil spirit?’ And the father said, ‘from childhood.’”] “Lacking the premise of original sin, what possible cause can be imagined in this youth why he should since childhood have been vexed with this most fierce demonic possession? It seems clear that no actual sin of his own could have elicited this. So let the catholic remember and confess that no one is born into this world free from the taint of the first transgression. Let him implore the grace of God, through which he might be ‘delivered from this body of death through Jesus Christ our Lord.’” - Bede, Homilies on the Gospels 1.25, qtd. in ACCS: Mark, 123.

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

The Eight-Sided Font

Many baptismal fonts, including ours at St. John’s, are an eight-sided structure.  The number eight represents resurrection and new creation.  Ever since God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh, time has passed in seven day increments.  When Jesus came to save the world from sin He was crucified on the sixth day (Friday), rested in the tomb on the seventh day (Saturday), and by raising from the tomb on Sunday introduced a new eighth day into creation - the day of the new creation.  Our eight-sided baptismal font reminds us that all who are baptized into Christ are baptized into His resurrection and are made new creations in Him.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Solid Declaration of the Formula of Concord, Article VII: The Holy Supper, para. 68-71

Unworthy guests go to this Sacrament without true repentance and sorrow for their sins, without true faith and the good intention of amending their lives. By unworthy eating, they are guilty of profaning Christ's body and blood.

Some Christians have a weak faith and are shy, troubled, and terrified because of the great number of their sins. They think that in their great impurity they are not worthy of this precious treasure and Christ's benefits. They feel their weakness of faith and lament it, and from their hearts desire that they may serve God with stronger, more joyful faith and pure obedience. These are the truly worthy guests for whom this Sacrament has been especially instituted. Christ says:

    - Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28)

    - Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. (Matthew 9:12)

    - As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him; for God has welcomed him. [Romans 14:1-3]

    - Whoever believes in [the Son, be it with a strong or a weak faith,] may have eternal life. [Jn. 3:15]

Worthiness does not depend on the greatness or smallness, the weakness or strength of faith. Instead, it depends on Christ's merit, which the distressed father of little faith [Mark 9:24] enjoyed.
