Building Healthy Families - Many years ago our Lutheran forefathers came to the United States seeking the religious freedom guaranteed in our nation’s Constitution. We celebrate that freedom today, even as we recognize the growing challenges to religious liberty. Today, join us in praying for our leaders, both those in government and in our church, that freedom not just to have faith, but to live out that faith in the public square will be protected. Your prayers for the staff and leadership of LFS as they face these challenges are also appreciated.   Lutheran Family Services

Building Healthy Families: Humility is hard to come by during an argument - especially when you think you are right and your husband (or wife) is wrong. Here are 9 simple but powerful words that can help when conflict comes in your marriage: I am sorry. I was wrong. Please forgive me. “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger”. Proverbs 15:1.   Lutheran Family Services

Stewardship Corner - As faithful stewards, we acknowledge our responsibility and the opportunity to serve and honor God with our lives and blessings.  Jesus shared the secret of living the fruitful life: “If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.  For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it” (Luke 9:23-24).  It is only by giving ourselves in complete service to the Savior that we can find our true places in life and fill them.

Smile-Amazon – Just a reminder to those who shop on line at amazon.com.    The Church is signed up to receive 5% of your purchase as an extra donation.   We received our first payment this week $9.52.   Not a lot of money but as members buy hopefully this will increase.  If you are in charge of buying items for your office sign us up!   The ideal is for this account to help supplement our budget or use for special projects that we may not have the funds for.   It is really easy to set up.   Log onto www.smileamazon.com and you will need to choose St. John’s Lutheran Church-Burt Iowa in the box provided.   Set that as your charity.   Every time you want to shop you will need to log onto the smileamazon.com website and it will transfer you over to www.amazon.com.   Up on the top you will see St. John’s Lutheran Church listed.   You need to do nothing else.   Amazon will determine which items get the 5% and which ones do not – you won’t even notice it.    It does not raise the price of any item you are purchasing to compensate for this 5%.

Building Healthy Families In her book, “The Power of a Positive Mom”, Karol Ladd notes the importance of intentionally planning for summer activities with your children. She suggests making a large poster with “The Summer of 2016” written across the top. Invite your kids to join you in making a list of fun activities you want to do over the next two months. Also include some summer rules, like how much television time will be allowed, what chores will be required and how late is too late to sleep in. A little planning will help you enjoy these months off and avoid that regretful September statement, “Where did the summer go?”  . -Lutheran Family Service
