Building Healthy Families - Do hurtful or disrespectful words sometimes come out of your mouth during the week as you interact with your spouse or family? If so, know that continuing this habit unchecked is damaging to your relationships in ways that you might not even know. Try memorizing this verse and call it to mind when you are tempted to bite at someone you love this week: “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14). You – and your relationships – will be better for it! Lutheran Family Service - www.LutheranFamilyService.org.

LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Proper 17)

Old Testament: Proverbs 25:2-10

Solomon shares proverbs regarding relationships with kings and humility.

Epistle: Hebrews 13:1-17

The writer of Hebrews gives concluding instructions to his readers on their life together in the Church.

Gospel: Luke 14:1-14

Jesus heals a man on the Sabbath, and tells parables about not sitting at the place of honor at a wedding feast and inviting the poor, crippled, lame, and blind to your own banquets.

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“If any one among you wants to be set above others, let him win it by the decree of heaven and be crowned by those honors that God bestows.  Let him surpass the many by having the testimony of glorious virtues.  The rule of virtue is a lowly mind that does not love boasting.  It is humility.  The blessed Paul also counted this worthy of all esteem.  He writes to those who eagerly desire saintly pursuits, ‘Love humility.’” - Cyril of Alexandria, Commentary on Luke, Homily 102, qtd. in ACCS: Luke, p. 236

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Large Catechism, Sixth Commandment, paragraphs 202-207

This commandment, "You shall not commit adultery" is directed against all kinds of unchastity, whatever it may be called. Not only is the outward act of adultery forbidden, but also every kind of cause, motive, and means or persuasion toward inchastity. We must also resist temptation, offer protection, and give help and counsel, so as to maintain our neighbor's honor. For whenever you abandon this effort when you could resist unchastity, or whenever you overlook it, you are as truly guilty of adultery as the one doing the deed. This much is required of you: everyone must live chastely himself and help his neighbor do the same. So by this commandment God wishes to build a hedge about and protect every spouse so that no one trespasses against him or her.

But this commandment is aimed directly at the state of marriage and gives us an opportunity to speak about it. First, understand and mark well how gloriously God honors and praises this estate. For by His commandment He both approves and guards it. Therefore, He also wishes us to honor it and to maintain and govern it as a divine and blessed estate because, in the first place, He has instituted it before all others. He created man and woman separately not for lewdness, but so that they might live together in marriage, be fruitful, bear children, and nourish and train them to honor God.

Building Healthy Families - “A man’s spirit can endure sickness, but who can bear a broken spirit?” (Proverbs 18:14) It’s easier for us to deal with short term difficulties, including sickness that resolves with treatment or time. But many are suffering today from the prolonged nature of personal, cultural or political unrest and turmoil we see all around, creating low levels of stress that are constant and unresolved. Everyone needs someone with whom they can share both burdens and encouragement. Look around to see who God has put on your path. Who has or is close to having a broken spirit and needs a word of hope from you? Your listening ear can be just what they need when feeling overwhelmed. LFS counselors are also available to help, in person or through video link, when needed. Lutheran Family Service

LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Proper 16)

Old Testament: Isaiah 66:18-23

“From new moon to new moon, and from Sabbath to Sabbath, all flesh shall come to worship before me, declares the Lord.”

Epistle: Hebrews 12:4-29

God disciplines us as a father disciplines his son.

Gospel: Luke 13:22-30

“Strive to enter through the narrow door.”

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“‘Strive to enter in by the narrow door.’ This reply may seem perhaps to wander from the scope of the question. The man wanted to learn whether there would be few who are saved, but he explained to him the way whereby he might be saved himself. He said, ‘Strive to enter in by the narrow door.’ What do we answer to this objection? . . . It was a necessary and valuable thing to know how a man may obtain salvation. He is purposely silent to the useless question. He proceeds to speak of what was essential, namely, of the knowledge necessary for the performance of those duties by which people can enter the narrow door.” - Cyril of Alexandria, Commentary on Luke, Homily 99, qtd. in ACCS: Luke, p. 229.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Solid Declaration of the Formula of Concord, Art. VI: The Third Use of God’s Law, para. 9-12

Because of fleshly lusts, God's regenerate children need the daily instruction and admonition of the Law in this life. But they also need frequent punishments. So they will follow God's Spirit, as it is written:

It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn Your statutes. (Psalm 119:71)

I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. (1 Corinthians 9:27)

If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. (Hebrews 12:8)

Dr. Luther explained this in the Epistle [Ephesians 4:22-28].

“We must explain what the Gospel does and Law's office in this matter, regarding believers' good works. The Law says it is God's will that we should walk in a new life. But it does not give the power to do it. The Holy Spirit renews the heart. He is given and received, not through the Law, but through the preaching of the Gospel. Thereafter, the Holy Spirit uses the Law in order to teach the regenerate from it and to point out and show them in the Ten Commandments what is the "will of God, what is acceptable and perfect" in what "good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk".

Make sure the young adults in your family and congregation who are going off to college or returning to high school this month continue to hear from you! LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Proper 15)

Old Testament: Jeremiah 23:16-29

“Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes.”

Epistle: Hebrews 11:17-40; 12:1-3

Look to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith.

Gospel: Luke 12:49-56

Jesus came to cast fire and bring division on the earth.

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“It is necessary that we should esteem the human less than the divine. If honor is to be paid to parents, how much more to your parents’ Creator, to whom you owe gratitude for your parents! If they by no means recognize their Father, how do you recognize them? He does not say children should reject a father but God is to be set before all. Then you have in another book, 'He that loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.’ You are not forbidden to love your parents, but you are forbidden to prefer them to God. Natural children are true blessings from the Lord, and no one must love the blessing that he has received more than God by whom the blessing, once received, is preserved.” - Ambrose, Exposition of the Gospel of Luke 7.134-36, qtd. in ACCS: Luke, p. 218-219

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

Kneeling at Communion

In the old days people would kneel when a king entered his throne room.  We do the same when Christ our King comes to us at the Lord’s Supper.  Pastor kneels to one knee (genuflects) as the Body and Blood of Jesus enter the room in the Words of Institution (the congregation can also bow at this time).  Then as we receive the Body and Blood of Jesus we show our greatest reverence to our king and kneel with both knees.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Augsburg Confession, Article XXVIII: Church Authority, paragraphs 16-23

Paul says, "Our citizenship is in heaven" And, "The weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds"

Our teachers distinguish between the duties of these two authorities [state and church]. They command that both be honored and acknowledged as God's gifts and blessings.

If bishops have any authority of the State, this is not because they are bishops. In other words, it is not by the Gospel's commission. It is an authority they have received from kings for the purpose of administering the civil affairs. This is another office, not the ministry of the Gospel.

The bishops' civil authority must be distinguished from the Church's jurisdiction. The only authority that belongs to the bishops is what they have according to the Gospel. For they have been given the ministry of the Word and Sacraments. They have no other authority according to the Gospel than the authority to forgive sins, to judge doctrine, to reject doctrines contrary to the Gospel, and to exclude from the communion of the Church wicked people, whose wickedness is known. They cannot exclude people with human force, but simply by the Word. But when they teach or establish anything against the Gospel, then the congregations are forbidden by God's command to obey them. Beware of false prophets. (Matt. 7:15)

Consider playing cards with elders at your local care center or bringing a meal to the single mom who lives across the street. Look around to see who has a need and do something to help. May God bless your “religion” this week! Lutheran Family Service - www.LutheranFamilyService.org.

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“Give away these earthly things, and win that which is in heaven. Give that which you must leave, even against your will, that you may not lose things later. Lend your wealth to God, that you may be really rich. [...] Worldly wealth has many foes. There are numerous thieves, and this world of ours is full of oppressors. Some plunder by secret means, while others use violence and tear it away even from those who resist. But no one can do damage to the wealth that is laid up above in heaven. God is its keeper, and he does not sleep.” - Cyril of Alexandria, Commentary on Luke, Homily 91, qtd. in ACCS: Luke, 211.

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

Bowing to the Altar

The entire church building is a holy place because it has been set apart from other buildings as the place where Jesus comes to us with his Word and Body and Blood. The altar is especially holy because that is the place where the Body and Blood of Jesus sits. Bowing (or genuflecting in some traditions) toward the altar during Communion, as well as any other time we approach it, is a way to show reverence to the place that God regularly hallows with his bodily presence.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Apology of the Augsburg Confession, Article V: Love and Fulfilling the Law, para. 15-20

We profess that the work of the Law must be begun in us, and that it must be kept continually more and more. Our theologians not only require good works, but they also show how they can be done. Human nature is far too weak to resist the devil by its own powers. We may pray for the governance and defense of the Holy Spirit, that we may neither be deceived and err, nor be pushed to do anything against God's will. Christ has overcome the devil, and has given to us the promise and the Holy Spirit, that—by divine aid—we may overcome. 1 John 3:8 says, "The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil." We teach not only how the Law can be kept, but also how God is pleased if anything is done. This is not because we satisfy the Law, but because we are in Christ. It is clear that we require good works. We also say: Our love for God, even though it is small, cannot possibly be separated from faith. For we come to the Father through Christ. When forgiveness of sins has been received, then we are truly certain that we have a God that cares for us. We call upon Him, we give Him thanks, we fear Him, we love Him as 1 John 4:19 teaches, "We love because He first loved us." In other words, we love Him because He gave His Son for us and forgave us our sins. In this way John shows that faith comes first and love follows.
