Elder for August: Boyd Shipler

St. John’s Parent-Teacher Meeting - All parents, students, and teachers will have a meeting in the sanctuary after church on Sunday, August 30th to discuss the upcoming year of Christian education at St. John’s.  If you can’t attend this meeting, please let Pastor know and he can schedule an individual meeting at a time that works for you.

Holy Communion available - If you are not comfortable coming to the Sunday service but would still like to receive Holy Communion, you are welcome to participate in a Divine Service in the sanctuary at St. John’s during the week by appointment.  Bread and wine will be laid out before your arrival and Pastor can maintain plenty of distance during the service.  If you are not able to come to the sanctuary, we can arrange a safe way for you to receive the Lord’s Supper at home.  Feel free to call Pastor Cowell on his cell phone at 319-464-5548 to set up a time to meet.

St. John’s Live-streamed Service - St. John’s is now live-streaming our Sunday Divine Service on our YouTube channel: “St. John’s Burt.” These services will be archived for you to view on YouTube later as well.

Sunday School and Adult Bible Study Returns! - Sunday school and adult Bible study will resume Sunday, September 13th at 8:00 a.m.  All are welcome to join our Sunday school students in the church basement at 8:00 as we bless each classroom for another year of Christian instruction.

Adult Bible Study on the Book of Matthew - Beginning September 13th the adult Bible study will begin a verse-by-verse study of the Gospel of Matthew.  During the study we will be utilizing a journal version of the Book of Matthew to help us note key details and moments in the text along the way.  Each attendee will receive a book on the first Sunday they join the study.  Tables are spread out in the basement as a social distancing measure and you are welcome to wear a mask if you choose to do so.

Midweek Christian Instruction for All Ages - The education committee has decided to postpone VBS until next year.  There is still, however, an opportunity for church members of all ages to enjoy each other’s company outside of Sunday morning!  This year we are encouraging parents and other adults to sit in with the kids during their Wednesday evening instruction.  The main purpose of this is to encourage our children with our good example and to share our wisdom and experience with them as fellow Christians.  Therefore, this is your open invitation to join us on Wednesday evenings in the church basement for any one, several, or all lessons!  A class schedule along with an explanation of all of the changes to our midweek program will be published in the September Parish Messenger so that you can take note of any lessons you would be especially interested in attending.

New Weekly Announcements Email - St. John’s has started emailing our weekly announcements through Flocknote.  If you would like to receive these weekly announcements in a computer or smartphone-friendly format, contact the church office and we can add you to the list.  You can also contact the church office to update any of your Flocknote preferences.

Building Healthy Families: Every one of us – young/old, male/female, retired/working, student/teacher – has had plenty of change to deal with recently. Not one of us is immune to the cumulative impact of it all. A wise person once said, “The best way to endure change is by pondering His permanence.”  Looking to Him instead of others for perspective makes a difference. May the changes you have had to face over the past months, the ones you are facing today, and those you will undoubtedly face in the days ahead be tempered with this certain, unchanging truth: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

Christian Virtue

The Epistles of Holy Scripture are full of advice and encouragement toward loving our neighbor by living a virtuous life.  The Catechism of the Catholic Church succinctly defines virtue as “a habitual and firm disposition to do the good.”  The Church often divides the concept of virtue into seven categories with these or similar titles:  chastity, temperance, charity, diligence, patience, kindness, and humility. In addition to being a good way to love your neighbor, practicing these seven virtues also guards against temptation from the so-called seven deadly sins of: lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Formula of Concord, Solid Declaration, Article VI: Third Use of God’s Law, paragraphs 18-20

Believers are not completely renewed in this world. The old Adam clings to them right up to the grave. Therefore, the struggle between the spirit and the flesh remains in them. They delight in God's Law according to the inner man [Romans 7:22], but the law in their members struggles against the law in their mind. Therefore, they are never without the Law. Nevertheless, they are not under [Romans 6:14], but in the Law. They live and walk in the Law of the Lord, and yet do nothing in the Law because of force.

As far as the old Adam is concerned, which still clings to them, he must be driven not only by the Law, but also by punishments. Nevertheless, he does everything against his will and under coercion, no less than the godless are driven and held in obedience by the Law's threats (1 Corinthians 9:27; Romans 7:18-19).

This doctrine of the Law is needed by believers in order that they may not make up a holiness and devotion of their own. Using God's Spirit as an excuse, they must not set up a self-chosen worship, without God's Word and command. For it is written:

"You shall not do according to […] whatever is right in [your] own eyes," but "be careful to obey all these words that I command you," "you shall not add to it or take from it." (Deuteronomy 12:8,28,32)

LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Proper 16)

Old Testament: Isaiah 51:1-6

The Lord reminds us that this heaven and earth will pass away, but His salvation and righteousness will continue forever.

Epistle: Romans 11:33-12:8

St. Paul urges us to not be conformed to the world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God.

Gospel: Matthew 16:13-20

St. Peter confesses Jesus to be the Christ, the Son of the living God.

LCMS MEMORY VERSE CHALLENGE

But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. "The LORD is my portion,' says my soul, 'therefore I will hope in him.' - Lamentations 3:21-24

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

Simon Peter

It's common today for people to have a first, middle, and last name and maybe even a nickname. People in the ancient world often had several names as well. In today's Gospel lesson Jesus refers to the Apostle Peter as both Simon Bar-Jonah and Peter. Simon is Peter's given name - what we would call his first name. Bar-Jonah is in a sense his last name.  Bar-Jonah means son of Jonah (think of the word bar mitzvah: son of righteousness, which is a ceremony that marks the transition of a Jewish boy into manhood). Peter is the nickname Jesus gives to Simon.  Peter is Greek for rock. Jesus also calls Peter Cephas in John's Gospel, which is Aramaic for rock.  Jesus announces that both Simon the man as well as Simon's right confession of Him is a rock on which Jesus builds His Church, against which the gates of hell will never prevail.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Large Catechism, Ten Commandments, paragraphs 1-4

First Commandment: You shall have no other gods.

What this means: You shall have Me alone as your God. What is the meaning of this, and how is it to be understood? What does it mean to have a god? Or, what is God? Answer: A god means that from which we are to expect all good and in which we are to take refuge in all distress. So, to have a God is nothing other than trusting and believing Him with the heart. Confidence and faith of the heart alone make both God and an idol. If your faith and trust is right, then your god is also true. On the other hand, if your trust is false and wrong, then you do not have the true God. For these two belong together, faith and God ["Whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him." Hebrews 11:6]. Whatever you set your heart on and put your trust in is truly your god.

The purpose of this commandment is to require true faith and trust of the heart, which settles upon the only true God and clings to Him alone. It is like saying, "See to it that you let Me alone be your God, and never seek another." In other words, "Whatever you lack of good things, expect it from Me. Look to Me for it. And whenever you suffer misfortune and distress, crawl and cling to Me. I, yes, I, will give you enough and help you out of every need. Only do not let your heart cleave to or rest on any other."

LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Proper 15)

Old Testament: Isaiah 56:1, 6-8

The Lord promises salvation for all nations alongside Israel.

Epistle: Romans 11:1-2a, 13-15, 28-32

St. Paul explains that even though the Jewish people largely rejected Jesus, God offers salvation to all people, even His beloved Israel, by faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Gospel: Matthew 15:21-28

A Canaanite woman seeks the help of Jesus for her demon-oppressed daughter, and confesses with great faith that she would be content to be a dog receiving crumbs under its master's table.

LCMS MEMORY VERSE CHALLENGE

Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live. - John 11:25

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

Jews and Gentiles

Two groups of people that are frequently mentioned in Scripture are the Jews and Gentiles.  Jewish people were the biological descendents from the twelve tribes of Israel.  By Jesus' day the Jews did not live in a central location - although many lived in Jerusalem where the temple was located.  The Jews were the people God called His own people.  They were the people from whom the Messiah would come.  The Gentiles were any non-Jewish people.  Most Gentiles such as the Romans or Greeks worshiped false gods.  However, some believed in the true God and were even involved, to a limited extent, in the worship life of the Jewish people.  In today's Gospel lesson we see that Jesus was preparing the world to see that after His death and resurrection any person, Jew or Gentile, who believed and was baptized would now be called a child of God.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Apology of the Augsburg Confession, Article V: Love and Fulfilling the Law, paragraphs 213, 216-217

Here Christ's declaration applies, "So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty' " (Luke 17:10). These words clearly declare that God saves by mercy and because of His promise, not that it is due because of the value of our works. [...]

The adversaries are deceived regarding the term faith. If faith would signify historical knowledge that the wicked and the devils also possess, the adversaries would correctly argue that faith is unprofitable when they say: "When we have believed all things, say, 'We are unprofitable servants.' " But we are not speaking of historical knowledge, but of confidence in God's promise and mercy. This confidence in the promise confesses that we are unprofitable servants. Yes, this confession that our works are unworthy is the very voice of faith, as appears in this example of Daniel 9:18, which we cited, "We do not present our pleas before You because of our righteousness." Faith saves because it takes hold of mercy, or the promise of grace, even though our works are unworthy. Understood this way, namely, that our works are unworthy, the word reversal does not injure us: "When you shall have believed all things, say, 'We are unprofitable servants.' " We teach the same as the entire Church when we teach that we are saved by mercy.

Building Healthy Families: "A man's spirit can endure sickness, but who can bear a broken spirit?"  (Proverbs 18:14) It's easier for us to deal with short term difficulties, including sickness that resolves with treatment or time. But many are suffering today from the prolonged nature of Covid-19 and its ongoing physical, financial, emotional, and relational consequences. Look out for those God has put on your path.  Who has or is close to having a broken spirit? A word of hope from you, a note of encouragement, and a listening ear can be just what they need when feeling overwhelmed. LFS workers are available to help, in person or through video link, when needed. Lutheran Family Service - www.LutheranFamilyService.org

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

The New Testament Ark

The boat has long been a symbol of the Christian Church.  Part of the reason for this is that boats make a number of appearances in the New Testament. Jesus made a habit of teaching from a boat.  Jesus called several of the disciples out of fishing boats to be "fishers of men."  Jesus revealed His divinity to His disciples by walking on water to their boat on one occasion and rebuking the wind and waves from a boat on another occasion. Another reason that the boat is a symbol of the Church is the Church's similarity to Noah's ark.  Just as God kept Noah and His family safe in the ark from the Flood as evildoers drowned in judgement all around them, so now God washes sin from us in Baptism and places us safe in the ark of the Church.  If you look up in many sanctuaries such as ours you will see that they have been designed to look like the hull of a ship flipped upside down.  By this we are reminded that when we are hearing the Word and receiving the Sacrament as God's Holy Church, we are safe and secure with Christ from any danger or threat to our eternal life.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Formula of Concord, Solid Declaration, Article II: Free Will, paragraphs 49-51

"It is not God's will that anyone should be damned, but that all people should be converted to Him and be saved eternally" [2 Peter 3:9].

"Say to them, 'As I live, declares the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live.'" (Ezekiel 33:11)

Out of His immense goodness and mercy, God provides for the public preaching of His divine eternal Law and His wonderful plan for our redemption, that of the holy, only saving Gospel of His eternal Son, our only Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ. By this preaching He gathers an eternal Church for Himself from the human race and works in people's hearts true repentance, knowledge of sins, and true faith in God's Son, Jesus Christ. By this means, and in no other way (i.e., through His holy Word, when people hear it preached or read it, and through the holy Sacraments when they are used according to His Word), God desires to call people to eternal salvation. He desires to draw them to Himself and convert, regenerate, and sanctify them.

"Since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe." (1 Cor. 1:21)

"So faith comes from the preaching and preaching through the Word of Christ" (Ro. 10:17)…
