5th Sunday Communion – During a special Council Meeting this week it was decided to drop the communion on the 5th Sunday during the vacancy.  We will not be celebrating communion today.

VBS - “Barnyard Roundup”  is the theme of Vacation Bible School this year.  The dates for VBS will be Sunday June 26th through Wed. June 29th from 5:30 p.m. till 8:15 p.m.  All students Preschool through 6th grade are invited to attend.   We need Volunteers in all areas.  Please contact the Board of Education.

VBS Contributions – We are accepting monetary contributions for VBS to help defray expenses.  If you wish to give a donation, please mark an envelope as VBS and place in the offering plate.  Thanks!!

Preschool Registration: We are now taking enrollment applications for the 2016-2017 school year.  If you have a student or know of a student who is 3-5 years of age and would like to attend preschool, contact me Jessie Parsons (515-320-0501) or the church office (515-924-3344) for all the information.

Smile-Amazon – Just a reminder to those who shop on line at amazon.com.    The Church is signed up to receive 5% of your purchase as an extra donation.   We received our first payment this week $9.52.   Not a lot of money but as members buy hopefully this will increase.  If you are in charge of buying items for your office sign us up!   The ideal is for this account to help supplement our budget or use for special projects that we may not have the funds for.   It is really easy to set up.   Log onto www.smileamazon.com and you will need to choose St. John’s Lutheran Church-Burt Iowa in the box provided.   Set that as your charity.   Every time you want to shop you will need to log onto the smileamazon.com website and it will transfer you over to www.amazon.com.   Up on the top you will see St. John’s Lutheran Church listed.   You need to do nothing else.   Amazon will determine which items get the 5% and which ones do not – you won’t even notice it.    It does not raise the price of any item you are purchasing to compensate for this 5%.

Building Healthy Families Increasing a child’s self-esteem has become a goal of many child-rearing experts. While it is good for children to become confident, a more Biblical concept of childrearing is that a child be taught how to demonstrate humility. When learning a difficult lesson by failing or when receiving an honor or award at school, humility is a character trait that can be passed along to children that will help them to face both their challenges and successes with modesty. (Ephesians 4: 1-3). -Lutheran Family Service

Building Healthy Families –  Have you ever noticed that it is hard to ignore the conversations of family members that are happening around you? Parents, take advantage of this reality by talking about the important things you want your kids to learn…and do it just barely within their hearing distance. The more positive comments they overhear you making about their school and their teachers, the more respectful they will be of their school and teachers. The more they hear you talking about your appreciation of your pastor, the more they will appreciate him.   -Lutheran Family Service

Building Healthy Families – The Bible tells us that if we are in Christ, we are a new creation (1 Corinthians 5:17). But don’t expect yourself (or those you love) to be perfect! Until we get to heaven, every one of us is still a work-in-progress! Martin Luther said it well: “This life, therefore, is not godliness, but the process of becoming godly, not health, but getting well, not being but becoming, not rest but exercise. We are not now what we shall be, but we are on the way.”   -Lutheran Family Service

Stewardship Corner - God gave us His first and best when he gave His one and only Son.  Jesus took human form and was born of the Virgin Mary for our salvation.  As His people, we receive with graciousness, and we are called to respond with generosity.  We give our first and best because God has given us life and all of life’s resources.  Giving our first and best calls on us to set aside our offerings to the Lord first before handling our other obligations. Love for the Lord makes our generous giving possible.  When we give off the top as a priority, we confirm our trust in God.

Building Healthy Families The Scriptures are full of references to mothers and their unique qualities. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 isn’t typically thought of as one of them, but there are many mothers who are great examples of the high calling of love described there:  Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. Happy Mother’s Day to all women who so lovingly care for others! -Lutheran Family Service
