LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Palm Sunday)

Old Testament: Zechariah 9:9-12

Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey,

Epistle: Philippians 2:5-11

Jesus humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Gospel: John 12:20-43

Jesus shares with the people by what kind of death He was going to die. Many did not believe in Him, and some did but were afraid to confess it.

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“‘Untie the donkey and bring it to me.’ He began with a manger and finished with a donkey, in Bethlehem with a manger, in Jerusalem with a donkey.” - Ephrem the Syrian, Commentary on Tatian’s Diatessaron, qtd. from ACCS: Mark, p. 155.

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

The Palm Sunday Procession

In ancient days when a king rode into town the people would cover the dusty road with their coats or with branches from a tree in order to show their king the highest honor and respect: equivalent to rolling out the red carpet.  Today we process into church with palm branches not only to mimic our Lord’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem to conquer sin and death on the cross, but also to celebrate His triumphal entry among us as He enters our midst in Word and Sacrament. In the Palm Sunday Divine Service Jesus travels with us through our remembrance of His cross and passion to the joy of Easter.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Solid Declaration of the Formula of Concord, Article III: Righteousness of Faith, para. 30-32

The Scriptures teach that the righteousness of faith before God stands only in the gracious reconciliation or the forgiveness of sins, which is presented to us out of pure grace, only for the sake of the merit of the Mediator, Christ. This is received through faith alone in the Gospel promise. In the same way also, in justification before God, faith relies neither on contrition nor on love or other virtues. Faith relies on Christ alone and on His complete obedience by which He has fulfilled the Law for us. This obedience is credited to believers for righteousness.

Furthermore, neither contrition nor love nor any other virtue, but faith alone is the only means and instrument by which, and through which, we can receive and accept God's grace, Christ's merit, and the forgiveness of sins, which are brought to us in the Gospel promise.

Believers who have been justified through faith in Christ have the righteousness of faith credited to them in this life. They also have the righteousness of good works. But these two types of righteousness must not be mixed with each other. For the righteousness [of our good works] is incomplete and impure in this life because of the flesh. Only for the sake of Christ's obedience, suffering, and death is the person pleasing and acceptable to God and received into adoption and made an heir of eternal life.

LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Lent 5)

Old Testament: Jeremiah 31:31-34

God will make a new covenant with His people, and write His law upon their hearts.

Epistle: Hebrews 5:1-10

Jesus is our perfect and eternal high priest.

Gospel: Mark 10:32-45

Jesus tells the disciples, “whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all.”

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“Do you see? They did not understand what they were asking for when they were talking to him about crowns and rewards and the privilege of the first seats and honors even before the contest had begun. [...] The timing was precisely wrong. For this was not the right time for crowns or prizes. It was the time for struggles, contests, toils, sweat, wrestling rings and battles.” - Chrysostom, On the Incomprehensible Nature of God, 8.32-33, quoted in ACCS: Mark, 149-150.

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

Maundy Thursday

Next week we celebrate Maundy Thursday, also commonly called Holy Thursday. The term Maundy comes from the Latin word mandatum which means “mandate” or “command.”  This comes from the traditional Gospel reading appointed for the day from John chapter 13, in which after Jesus washes His disciples’ feet says to them: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another (John 13:34-35).”  Jesus gave this mandate to love one another on the same night in which He took bread and wine and mandated: “Take eat, this is my body; Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the New Testament in My blood.”

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Large Catechism, Part III: The Lord’s Prayer, paragraphs 59-63

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

So far we have prayed that God's name be honored by us and that His kingdom triumph among us. These two points deal with God's honor and our salvation. We receive God as our own and all His riches. But now we must firmly keep God's honor and our salvation, and not allow ourselves to be torn from them. In God's kingdom, although we have prayed for the greatest need we must also pray that God's will be done if we are to abide in God's will. We shall have to suffer many blows from everything that seeks to oppose the fulfillment of the first two petitions.

No one can believe how the devil opposes these prayers. He cannot allow anyone to teach or to believe rightly. It hurts him to have his lies and abominations exposed, which have been honored under the sham use of the divine name. It hurts him when he himself is disgraced, is driven out of the heart, and has to let a breach be made in his kingdom. Therefore, he rages as a fierce enemy with all his power and might. He marshals all his subjects and, in addition, enlists the world and our own flesh as his allies. For our flesh is in itself lazy and inclined to evil [Rom. 7:18], even though we have believed God's Word. The world is wicked. So he provokes the world against us, fans and stirs the fire, so that he may drive us back, cause us to fall, and again bring us under his power [2 Cor. 2:11; 1 Tim. 3:6-7].

LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Lent 4)

Old Testament: Numbers 21:4-9

Moses set a bronze serpent on a pole, so that all who looked at it would be healed of their snake bites.

Epistle: Ephesians 2:1-10

By grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Gospel: John 3:14-21

As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“Whoever has been bitten by the snakes of sin need only gaze on Christ and will have healing for the forgiveness of sins.” - Augustine, Sermon 6.7, qtd. from ACCS: John 1-10, p. 124

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

The Crucifix

Christians love the image of the cross.  The cross is for us a sign of victory over sin, death, and the devil.  Christians also love the image of the crucifix: Jesus hanging on the cross.  When we see a crucifix we see Jesus who, like the man in the parable of the treasure hidden in a field, in His joy sold all that He had on the cross to redeem us for His Father’s Kingdom. We also see the crucifix as a sign of victory.  The crucifix displays for us Jesus glorified on His throne as the great conqueror over sin, death, and the devil.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Solid Declaration of the Formula of Concord, Article II: Free Will, paragraphs 60-63

God the Lord draws the person whom He wants to convert [John 6:44]. He draws him in such a way that his darkened understanding is turned into an enlightened one and his perverse will into an obedient one. This is what the Scriptures call creating a clean heart [Psalm 51:10].

For this reason it is not correct to say that a person can do something good and helpful in divine things before his conversion. Because a person is "dead in [his] trespasses" (Ephesians 2:5) before his conversion, there can be no power to work anything good in divine things in him. Therefore, he has no way of doing something good and helpful in divine things. God has one way of working in a rational creature. He has another way of working in some other irrational creature, or in a stone or block. Yet, before a man's conversion, nothing at all can be credited to him for doing good in spiritual matters.

When a person has been converted [made alive], and is thus enlightened, and his will is renewed, then a person wants to do what is good (so far as he is regenerate or a new man). Then that person will "delight in the law of God, in [his] inner being" (Romans 7:22) and from that time forward does good to such an extent and as long as he is moved by God's Spirit, as Paul says [in Romans 8:14], "For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God."

Building Healthy Families - Husbands, want to have a great relationship with your wife, even during times of conflict? Don’t try harder to convince her of your point. Don’t walk away. Love her. Research supports what Scripture has already told us: During an argument, 72% of wives feel unloved. “Each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.” (Ephesians 5:33) It’s not just a good idea, it’s a clear directive from the creator of marriage Himself. And it works! Lutheran Family Service - www.LutheranFamilyService.org

LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Lent 3)

Old Testament: Exodus 20:1-17

The Lord gives the Ten Commandments from Mount Sinai.

Epistle: 1 Corinthians 1:18-31

The word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Gospel: John 2:13-25

Jesus drives the money-changers out of the temple, and says: “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“Those who have no desire for redemption have everything for sale. They do not want to be bought; they want to sell. Yet surely it is for their good that they be redeemed by the blood of Christ so that they may attain the peace of Christ.” - Augustine, Tractates on the Gospel of John 10.6.1-3, qtd. from ACCS: John 1-10, p. 101.

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

Destroy this Temple

In our Gospel lesson today Jesus says while He stands in the Jerusalem temple: “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?” But He was speaking about the temple of His body (see John 2:19-21).  The temple building in Jerusalem was, in fact, destroyed in 70 AD by the Romans during the First Jewish Revolt and has not been rebuilt to this day.  Although the destruction of the Jerusalem temple is an unfortunate loss from a historical and archaeological perspective, the destruction of the temple is of no consequence to our Christian faith.  Our temple is Jesus Christ, and in Him we dwell by faith for eternal life.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Apology of the Augsburg Confession, Article V: Love and Fulfilling the Law, para. 19-22

We teach not only how the Law can be kept, but also how God is pleased. This is not because we satisfy the Law, but because we are in Christ. It is clear that we require good works. We also say this: Our love for God, even though it is small, cannot possibly be separated from faith. For we come to the Father through Christ. When forgiveness of sins has been received, then we are truly certain that we have a God [Ex. 20:3], that is, that God cares for us. We call upon Him, we give Him thanks, we fear Him, we love Him as 1 Jn. 4:19 teaches, "We love because He first loved us." In other words, we love Him because He gave His Son for us and forgave us our sins. In this way John shows that faith comes first and love follows. Likewise, the faith of which we speak exists in repentance. I mean that faith is conceived in the terrors of conscience, which feels God's wrath against our sins and seeks forgiveness of sins, seeks to be freed from sin. In such terrors and other troubles, this faith ought to grow and be strengthened. Therefore, it cannot exist in people who live by the flesh, who are delighted by their own lusts and obey them. So, Paul says in Ro. 8:1, "There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." So, "We are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live" (8:12-13).
