THE FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

LECTIONARY SUMMARY

God Manifests His Glory in the Humility and Weakness of Christ Crucified

The Lord tells His people, “I brought you up from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery” (Mic. 6:4). By the sacrifice of His beloved Son, He has redeemed us from our slavery of sin and death; He has forgiven our transgressions by the shedding of His blood. His great mercy and salvation lead us “to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly” with our God (Mic. 6:8). We boast only in the incarnate and crucified Lord Jesus. He is “the power of God and the wisdom of God” (1 Co. 1:24). He is our life and salvation, our “wisdom” and “righteousness and sanctification and redemption” (1 Co. 1:30). Now He opens His mouth and teaches us His wisdom. By His cross and Passion, the kingdom of heaven is ours. We receive mercy and are satisfied; we see God and are called sons of God in Christ. “Blessed are you,” therefore, “when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely” on account of Christ (Mt. 5:11).

DOCTRINE OF THE DAY

Original Sin

“Our churches teach that since the fall of Adam all men begotten in the natural way are born with sin, that is, without the fear of God, without trust in God, and with the inclination to sin, called concupiscence.  Concupiscence is a disease and original vice that is truly sin.  It damns and brings eternal death on those who are not born anew through Baptism and the Holy Spirit.

Our churches condemn the Pelagians and others who deny that original depravity is sin, thus obscuring the glory of Christ’s merit and benefits. Pelagians argue that a person can be justified before God by his own strength and reason.” - Augsburg Confession, Article II: Original Sin

LESSON ON THE LITURGY

The Circuit Winkel

The LCMS has a long tradition of calling the periodic gathering of the pastors in a circuit a “winkel”.  Winkel is a German word that means “corner.”  So, picture around ten pastors gathered in a corner of the church discussing theology and current news and issues concerning their circuit and the synod as a whole. The Algona Circuit of Iowa District West consists of 15 area congregations (Trinity, Algona; St. John, Burt; St. Paul, Whittemore; St. John Fenton; St. Paul, Emmetsburg; Peace, West Bend; Trinity, Mallard; Zion, Ayrshire; Zion, LuVerne; Immanuel, Livermore; Immanuel, Lotts Creek; St. Luke, Fairville; St. John, Garner; St. Paul, Garner; Our Savior, Swea City).  The 9 pastors of these congregations gather monthly for our circuit Winkel. Please pray for our circuit’s congregations and pastors as we work together in faithfulness to Christ and His Word.

CHAT WITH THE CHURCH FATHERS

“‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.’ The Lord taught by way of example that they glory of human ambition must be left behind when he said, ‘The Lord your God shall you adore and him only shall you serve.’ And when he announced through the prophets that he would choose a people humble and in awe of his words, he introduced the perfect Beatitude as humility of spirit. Therefore he defines those who are inspired as people aware that they are in possession of the heavenly kingdom. … Nothing belongs to anyone as being properly one’s own, but all have the same things by the gift of a single parent.  They have been given the first things needed to come into life and have been supplied with the means to use them.” - Hilary of Poitiers, On Matthew 4.2, qtd. in ACCS: Matthew 1-13, p. 81

For Your Reflection:

THE THIRD SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

DOCTRINE OF THE DAY

Doctrine

Some have a negative reaction to the word “doctrine” as it pertains to our Christian faith.  However, doctrine is merely a word to describe the teachings of salvation as they are found in Holy Scripture.  Rev. Dr. Francis Pieper writes:

From the very beginning the Christian religion dealt with doctrine [...]. The entire Old Testament was written, as the Apostle Paul assures us, for our learning (doctrine [in the Greek text]), Rom. 15:4, and is profitable (doctrine [in the Greek]), 2 Tim. 3:16.  When in the fullness of time the Son of God appeared in the flesh and walked here on earth, He engaged in teaching.  He teaches from theship (Luke 5:3), on the mount (Matt. 5:2), in the synagogues (Luke 4:15), went about the land teaching (Matt. 4:23).  He als makes use of the forty days between His resurrection and ascension to teach (Acts 1:3), and before His ascension He gives His Church the commission to teach all nations to the Last Day: “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you” (Matt. 28:20). [...] Teaching the saving doctrine was [St. Paul’s] chief business, and he tells his successors in the ministry that it must be their chief business (Christian Dogmatics I, p. 70).

LESSON ON THE LITURGY

Apostles’ & Nicene Creeds in Worship

Over time, the two major creeds of the Church each became associated with one of the two sacraments.  Since it is the creed used in the rite of Holy Baptism, the Apostles’ Creed became known as the baptismal creed.  This, then, is the creed that Christians are encouraged to confess in their daily life of faith. The Nicene Creed, because of its detailed confession of the Son of God, became the creed used during the Sunday Divine Service, which, for the majority of Christian history, always included the Lord’s Supper.  In continuation of this tradition we at St. John’s confess the Nicene Creed at every Sunday Divine Service, and the Apostles’ Creed at every other service which does not include Holy Communion.

CHAT WITH THE CHURCH FATHERS

“That you may understand that the Lord was speaking of spiritual fishing, however, Peter says, ‘Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.’ It is as if he were saying, ‘Through the whole night our fishing has brought us nothing, and we have been laboring in vain. Now I will not fish with fishing gear but with grace, not with diligence acquired by skill but with the perseverance acquired by devotion.’ When Peter lets down the nets at the word, therefore, he is in fact letting down the teachings in Christ.  When he unfolds the tightly woven and well-ordered nets at the command of the Master, he is really laying out words in the name of the Savior in a fitting and clear fashion. By these words he is able to save not creatures but souls. ‘We toiled all night,’ he says, ‘and took nothing.’ Peter, who beforehand was unable to see in order to make a catch, enduring darkness without Christ, had indeed toiled through the whole night. But when the Savior’s light shone upon him the darkness scattered, and by faith he began to discern in the deep what he could not see with his eyes.” - Maximus of Turin, Sermon 110.2, qtd. in ACCS: Luke, p. 88-89.

For Your Reflection:

THE SECOND SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

LECTIONARY SUMMARY

God Reveals His Glory in Christ and His Cross

“The Lord, the Redeemer of Israel,” calls forth “his Holy One” (Is. 49:7), Jesus, the Christ, “from the womb” of His mother (Is. 49:1). The incarnate Son of God is revealed as the Savior, not only for Israel but also “as a light for the nations,” whose salvation reaches “to the end of the earth” (Is. 49:6). John came “baptizing with water” (John 1:31) to reveal Jesus as “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29), and who glorifies His God and Father by His atoning sacrifice upon the cross. When Jesus was baptized in the waters of the Jordan, the Holy Spirit descended “from heaven like a dove” and “remained on him” (John 1:32). By our Baptism, we are anointed by the same Spirit, adopted by God the Father, and “called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ” (1 Cor. 1:9). Therefore, we “are not lacking in any gift,” but we can trust Him who promises to sustain us to the end, “guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Cor. 1:7–8).

DOCTRINE OF THE DAY

Universal Grace

Holy Scripture and our Lutheran Confessions teach that God offers the promise of salvation by faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus to all people. Lutheran theologian Francis Pieper summarizes this doctrine in this way: “God’s gracious disposition in Christ is not limited to a part of mankind, but extends over all men without exception. Saving grace is universal grace (Christian Dogmatics II, p. 21).”  Two foundational texts of Scripture that teach this doctrine are John 3:16, and John 1:29 from our Gospel lesson today: “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”  Any Christian of a Calvinist or Reformed tradition denies the true doctrine of universal grace, and ought to be lovingly corrected for the good of their faith.

LESSON ON THE LITURGY

Preaching Styles

Have you ever noticed how different pastors deliver their sermons in significantly different ways? Even one pastor can vary his style from sermon to sermon.  This begs the question: is there a best way to deliver a sermon? As it turns out, the best way to preach a sermon is the way that delivers the truths of the Biblical texts of the day in the most faithful and clear way to the people. This can happen in a variety of different styles for different preachers and different hearers.

CHAT WITH THE CHURCH FATHERS

Ambrose says in his letter to a certain Irenaeus:

The world was subject to God by the Law because, according to the command of the Law, all are indicted. And yet, by the works of the Law, no one is justified. For, by the Law, sin is perceived, but guilt is not taken away. The Law, which declared all people sinners, seemed to have done harm. But when the Lord Jesus Christ came, He forgave to all people the sin, which no one could avoid. And, by the shedding of His own blood, He blotted out the handwriting that was against us. This is what he says in Romans 5:20, "The law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more." After the whole world became subject, Christ took away the sin of the whole world, as John testified in John 1:29, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" For this reason let no one boast about works, because no one is justified by his deeds. He who is righteous has righteousness given to him because he was justified from the washing of Baptism. Faith, therefore, is that which frees through the blood of Christ, because he is blessed "whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered" (Psalm 32:1).

Ambrose clearly denies justification to works and teaches that faith sets us free through the blood of Christ.
