Building Healthy Families – October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Pay attention to signs of domestic violence among your friends, be they young, old or middle age. Signs include bruises, isolation, and having to ask permission to do things or go places. Also know that women are at greatest risk of being killed by their violent partner when they file for divorce, obtain a protection order or take other steps to end the relationship. If you know someone in a dangerous relationship please let them know you care, help them make an appointment with an LFS counselor and give them the number of the Iowa Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-942-0333).     Lutheran Family Services

Burt Library will have a Presentation from the Blank Park Zoo of Des Moines on Iowa’s Wildest Adventure.  Come join us at 6:30 p.m. There will be Live Animals.  Also remember on Algona Schools Early Out Dismissal date (Oct. 12th and 26th ) will have special activities at the Burt Library.

Stewardship Corner - Whether God gives us much or little, we, as God’s stewards, have the same responsibilities: to receive gratefully, to manage faithfully, to share generously.  Big or little, large or small, it doesn’t make much difference.  God doesn’t want us to get hung on the size of what we have but rather on the faithfulness of what we do with what we have.  God wants us to be faithful with whatever He entrusts to us.  We will all have to give an account to God regardless of size (Romans 14:12).

Building Healthy Families - Every day LFS counselors meet with people who are experiencing a trial of some kind or have been deeply hurt by their own or someone else’s actions. We can help and we do, but we know we don’t work alone or by our own power. It’s certainly good news that we serve a God who can turn a trial into a triumph and a victim into a victorious survivor. Psalm 34 reminds us that He is not distant but is near to the brokenhearted and to those whose spirit has been crushed. God is with you today in whatever test, trial or pain you are experiencing. An LFS counselor is also here to walk with you through this hard time. Lutheran Family Services

Open House Bridal Shower honoring Lacey Geitzenauer and Nick Haynes on October 1, 2016 at the Lone Rock Presbyterian Church starting at 9:00 a.m. There will be a short program. Everyone welcome!

Stewardship Corner - The Apostle Paul wrote, “Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content” (Philippians 4:11).  How can Paul sitting in jail, facing death, say that he was content?  Paul’s contentment came from a relationship with Jesus.  Paul found his security and hope in Jesus.  Our contentment should not be based on the size of our paychecks, the size of our homes, the cars we drive, the size of our investments, or even the state of our health.  Our contentment can’t be bought and is not based on outward circumstances.  In the same way Paul found contentment, we can find contentment when we follow Jesus and place our trust and hope in Him.

Building Healthy Families: Suicide is the second leading cause of death for Iowa youth ages 15 to 34. In at least 90 percent of cases, a mood disorder, mental illness or substance abuse are significant contributing factors. Young people don’t have the life experience to know that periods of depression or relationship problems don’t last forever, leading to an overwhelming sense of hopelessness. Adolescents are also prone to acting impulsively. In combination, these things create the perfect storm for a young person in trouble, increasing the risk that they would attempt suicide. If you are concerned about a teenager in your life, contact an LFS counselor for information about how to help, or to begin counseling to change their path.      Lutheran Family Services

Building Healthy Families: Closed caption for all grandparents: Never doubt that you are critically important to the young members of your family. Don’t let their feigned disinterest or preoccupation with their cell phones dissuade you! Engage them often in conversation. They need to know about your family history, your values and your faith. Hearing about their baptism and their place as a child of the King is even better! Research shows that children who know the stories of where they came from have a stronger sense of confidence and security. Those are needed today more than ever.      Lutheran Family Services

Building Healthy Families:  Did you hear about the woman who chose “incorrect” as her password so that when she forgot what it was, her computer would say, “Your password is incorrect”? Memory loss is just one of the sometimes humorous but often frustrating and worrisome accompaniments to aging. LFS’ Remembering Hope project helps people learn the difference between normal age-related memory loss and dementia, current treatments and supports available for memory care in old age and increasing opportunities for ministry among this growing population. Call today to bring this program to your congregation or organization. Lutheran Family Services
