THE TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD

February 27, 2022

O God, in the glorious transfiguration of Your beloved Son You confirmed the mysteries of the faith by the testimony of Moses and Elijah. In the voice that came from the bright cloud You wonderfully foreshowed our adoption by grace. Mercifully make us co-heirs with the King in His glory and bring us to the fullness of our inheritance in heaven; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Building Healthy Families“Oh be careful little eyes what you see…” Remember this old Sunday School song? As simple as the lyrics may be, they hold a profound truth for us today. Some of the things we look at – in person or on a TV, computer screen or smart phone – aren’t good for us and aren’t God-pleasing. Our hearts and minds are imprinted with images and messages that negatively influence how we feel about ourselves and others. Be careful to avoid sites, shows and lyrics that don’t reflect God’s good will for you, His child. His designs and plans for you are oh so much better! “Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways.” Psalm 119:37 Lutheran Family Service - www.LutheranFamilyService.org.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Community Coffee is being held each Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. at the Burt Complex. Everyone is welcome.

LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Transfiguration)

Old Testament: Deuteronomy 34:1-12

Moses dies after being able to see the Promised Land, and Joshua takes his place.

Epistle: Hebrews 3:1-6

Moses was faithful in God’s house as a servant, but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son.

Gospel: Luke 9:28-36

Jesus is transfigured before Peter, James, and John, and Moses and Elijah appear at His side.

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“Peter saw this grace [of the Transfiguration], and so did those who were with him, although they were heavy with sleep.  The incomprehensible magnificence of the Godhead overwhelms the perceptions of our body.  If the sharpness of bodily vision cannot bear the ray of the sun directly into watching eyes, how may the corruption of human members endure the glory of God?” - Ambrose, Exposition of the Gospel of Luke 7.17, qtd. in ACCS: Luke, 160.

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

The Date of Easter

This Wednesday the season of Lent begins.  Why, you might ask, does Lent begin at a different time every year?  This is because Easter Day is never on the same calendar day.  Page xxiii of our hymnal gives this explanation for the date of Easter: “Easter Day is always the Sunday after the full moon that occurs on or after the spring equinox on March 21.  This full moon may happen on any date between March 21 and April 18 inclusive.  If the full moon falls on a Sunday, Easter Day is the Sunday following.  Easter Day cannot be earlier than March 22 or later than April 25.”  Whew! Praise God that we are saved by faith in Christ’s death and resurrection for us and not by our ability to calculate the appropriate time to celebrate it!

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Large Catechism, Ten Commandments, paragraphs 95-98

So much depends upon God's Word. Without it, no holy day can be sanctified. Therefore, we must know that God insists upon a strict observance of this command and will punish all who despise His Word and are not willing to hear and learn it, especially at the time appointed for the purpose.

It is not only the people who misuse and desecrate the holy day who sin against this commandment (those who neglect to hear God's Word because of greed or frivolity or lie in taverns and are dead drunk like swine). Even that other crowd sins [when] they listen to God's Word like it was any other trifle and only come to preaching because of custom. At the end of the year they know as little of God's Word as at the beginning. Up to now the opinion prevailed that you had properly hallowed Sunday when you had heard a Mass or the Gospel read. But no one cared for God's Word, and no one taught it. Now that we have God's Word, we fail to correct the abuse. We allow ourselves to be preached to and admonished, but we do not listen seriously.

Know, therefore, that you must be concerned not only about hearing, but also about learning and retaining God's Word in memory. Do not think that this is optional for you or of no great importance. Think that it is God's commandment, who will require an account from you about how you have heard, learned, and honored His Word.

LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Epiphany 7)

Old Testament: Genesis 45:3-15

Joseph reveals himself to his brothers and explains God’s plan to save them from the famine.

Epistle: 1 Corinthians 15:21-26, 30-42

“So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable.”

Gospel: Luke 6:27-38

Jesus preaches that we ought to love our enemies, and to judge not and we will not be judged.

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

[On Luke 6:27-28: “But I say to you that hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.”]

“What Christ said in word, he proved also by example. Indeed, when he was on the cross, he said in reference to his persecutors who were slandering him, ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing,’ so that he might pray for his slanderers, although he could have forgiven them himself.” - Ambrose, The Prayer of Job and David 2.2.6, qtd. in ACCS: Luke, 108

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

Fat Tuesday

Contrary to popular belief Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras, did not originate as a day of wild debauchery before the drudgery of Lent began!  The Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, sometimes also called Shrove Tuesday or Carnival, was a day for Christians to clear out all the distractions from their houses so that they could focus solely on the merits of Christ’s passion for the forty days of Lent.  This meant first and foremost clearing the sins out of their hearts by receiving private confession and absolution from their pastor, setting them on the right track of repentance and faith for the season of Lent.  The second task was to clear all of the fat or other foods out of the house that one would be giving up for the Lenten fast.  Not wanting to simply throw these ingredients out, the tradition of feasting on pancakes and other fattening foods came about, hence “Fat” Tuesday.  As Fat Tuesday approaches, consider how the practice of private confession and absolution and the practice of fasting might be profitable to your faith during this Lenten season.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Large Catechism, Lord’s Prayer: Fifth Petition, paragraphs 93-96

It is therefore the intent of this petition that God would not regard our sins and hold up to us what we daily deserve, but would deal graciously with us, and forgive, as He has promised, and thus grant us a joyful and confident conscience to stand before Him in prayer. For where the heart is not in right relation towards God, nor can take such confidence, it will nevermore venture to pray. But such a confident and joyful heart can spring from nothing else than the [certain] knowledge of the forgiveness of sin.

But there is here attached a necessary, yet consolatory addition: As we forgive. He has promised that we shall be sure that everything is forgiven and pardoned, yet in the manner that we also forgive our neighbor. For just as we daily sin much against God, and yet He forgives everything through grace, so we, too, must ever forgive our neighbor who does us injury, violence, and wrong, shows malice toward us, etc. If, therefore, you do not forgive, then do not think that God forgives you; but if you forgive, you have this consolation and assurance, that you are forgiven in heaven, not on account of your forgiving, for God forgives freely and without condition, out of pure grace, because He has so promised, as the Gospel teaches, but in order that He may set this up for our confirmation and assurance for a sign alongside of the promise which accords with this prayer, Luke 6:37: Forgive, and ye shall be forgiven.

LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Epiphany 6)

Old Testament: Jeremiah 17:5-8

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD.”

Epistle: 1 Corinthians 15:1-20

“If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain.”

Gospel: Luke 6:17-26

Jesus preaches the Beatitudes to a great crowd.

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“‘Blessed,’ it says, ‘are the poor.’ Not all the poor are blessed, for poverty is neutral. The poor can be either good or evil, unless, perhaps, the blessed pauper is to be understood as he whom the prophet described, saying, ‘A righteous poor man is better than a rich liar.’ Blessed is the poor man who cried and whom the Lord heard. Blessed is the man poor in offense. Blessed is the man poor in vices. Blessed is the poor man in whom the prince of this world finds nothing. Blessed is the poorman who is like that poor Man who, although he was rich, became poor for our sake.” - Ambrose, Exposition of the Gospel of Luke 5.53-54, qtd. in ACCS: Luke, 104.

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

INRI

Often times the letters “INRI” are hung above Christ on crucifixes and artwork.  These four letters are an abbreviation of the title in Latin that Pontius Pilate had posted on Jesus’ cross as he was crucified: Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum.  In English that is: Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.  This title, of which the Jews protested, is a title in which we rejoice.  Jesus is not only king of the Jews, but the king of all creation who reigns forgiveness and peace from the throne of the cross and the kingdom of His resurrection.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Apology of the Augsburg Confession, Article V: Love and Fulfilling the Law, para. 133-136

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 5:2)” [...]

[This and similar other passages] contain two things: The one is a preaching either of the Law or of repentance, which not only convicts those doing wrong, but also enjoins them to do what is right; the other is a promise which is added. But it is not added that sins are remitted without faith, or that works themselves are a propitiation.  Moreover, in the preaching of the Law these two things ought always to be understood, namely: First, that the Law cannot be observed unless we have been regenerated by faith in Christ, just as Christ says, John 15:5: “Without Me ye can do nothing.” Secondly, and though some external works can certainly be done, this general judgment: Without faith it is impossible to please God, which interprets the whole Law, must be retained; and the Gospel must be retained, that through Christ we have access to the Father, (Heb. 10:19; Rom. 5:2). For it is evident that we are not justified by the Law. Otherwise, why would there be need of Christ or the Gospel, if the preaching of the Law alone would be sufficient?
