Weekly Divine Service - Beginning this Lent we will begin offering the Lord’s Supper every Sunday at St. John’s.  If you are interested in continuing to explore the blessings of weekly Communion you can attend our Lenten midweek services where we will be meditating on the good of Jesus’ body and blood for our lives.  You can also read this month’s Parish Messenger in your box or pick up documents from last year’s study on the blessings of weekly Communion at the side table in back of church.  As always, if you are not yet comfortable receiving the Lord’s Supper every Sunday, know that you are free in Christ to remain in the pew during distribution.  Feel free to talk to Pastor Cowell if you’d like any more resources on this topic or have any questions regarding this practice.

LECTIONARY SUMMARY (First Sunday in Lent)

 Genesis 3:1–21; Romans 5:12–19; Matthew 4:1–11

The Lord Jesus Christ Is Our Champion against Satan

Following His Baptism, Jesus is “led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil” (Matt. 4:1). As He takes upon Himself the curse of our sin and sets Himself against our enemy, He trusts His Father’s voice and waits upon His Father’s hand for all things. The devil questions His sonship, but the beloved and well-pleasing Son remains faithful and lives “by every Word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matt. 4:4). Jesus patiently suffers hunger in His mortal flesh and returns to the dust whence man was taken, and by His pain He brings forth food for all the children of men (Gen. 3:18–19). By the sweat of His brow we eat the fruit of His Cross, even as our nakedness is covered by His righteousness. Although all people live in bondage to death through the trespass of the first man, Adam, all the more “have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one Man Jesus Christ abounded for many” (Rom. 5:15).  His righteous obedience “leads to justification and life for all men” (Rom. 5:18).

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Formula of Concord, Solid Declaration, Article VI: The Third Use of God’s Law, para. 20-21

This doctrine of the Law is needed by believers in order that they may not make up a holiness and devotion of their own. Using God's Spirit as an excuse, they must not set up a self-chosen worship, without God's Word and command. For it is written:

"You shall not do according to … whatever is right in [your] own eyes," but "be careful to obey all these words that I command you," "you shall not add to it or take from it." (Deuteronomy 12:8, 28, 32)

The doctrine of the Law is also necessary in and with believers' good works. Otherwise, a person can easily imagine that his work and life are entirely pure and perfect. But God's Law prescribes good works to believers in this way: it shows and indicates at the same time, as in a mirror, that in this life works are still imperfect and impure in us. So we must say with Paul, "I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted" [1 Cor. 4:4]. So Paul, when encouraging the regenerate to do good works, clearly presents to them the Ten Commandments (Rom. 13:9). He recognizes from the Law that his good works are imperfect and impure (Romans 7:7-13). And David declares:

I will run in the way of Your commandments. (Ps.119:32) Enter not into judgment with Your servant, for no one living is righteous before You. (Ps.143:2)

THE TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD

February 23, 2020

O God, in the glorious transfiguration of Your beloved Son You confirmed the mysteries of the faith by the testimony of Moses and Elijah. In the voice that came from the bright cloud You wonderfully foreshowed our adoption by grace. Mercifully make us co-heirs with the King in His glory and bring us to the fullness of our inheritance in heaven; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Transfiguration Sunday)

Exodus 24:8–18; 2 Peter 1:16–21; Matthew 17:1–9

God Manifests His Glory in the Body of Christ Jesus, Transfigured for Us by His Cross

The Transfiguration confirms “the prophetic word, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place” (2 Pet. 1:19). The divine glory of Jesus is manifested in the word of His apostles, who were “eyewitnesses of His majesty” (2 Pet. 1:16). “He was transfigured before them, and His face shone like the sun” (Matt. 17:2). Moses and Elijah witnessed the fulfillment of the Old Testament in this Lord Jesus, and the Father testified concerning Him: “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matt. 17:5). By His own blood, shed on the cross, Jesus makes and seals the new covenant with us. Hence, “the appearance of the glory of the Lord” is no longer “like a devouring fire” (Ex. 24:17), but is graciously revealed in His own body. As “Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel” went up the mountain with Moses and “beheld God, and ate and drank” (Ex. 24:9, 11), we also behold the Lord our God in Christ Jesus, and we abide with Him as we eat and drink His body and blood at the altar.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Apology of the Augsburg Confession, Article V: Love and Fulfilling the Law, para. 186-189

Christ's righteousness is given to us through faith, faith is righteousness credited to us. In other words, it is that by which we are made acceptable to God on account of the credit and ordinance of God, as Paul says, "Faith is counted as righteousness" (Romans 4:3,5). Only because we grasp Christ as the Atoning Sacrifice are good works, pleasing. We do not satisfy the Law, but for Christ's sake this is forgiven us, as Paul says, "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1). This faith gives God the honor, gives God that which is His own. By receiving the promises, it obeys Him. So the worship and divine service of the Gospel is to receive gifts from God. On the contrary, the worship of the Law is to offer and present our gifts to God. However, we can offer nothing to God unless we have first been reconciled and born again. This passage, too, brings the greatest comfort, as the chief worship of the Gospel is to desire to receive the forgiveness of sins, grace, and righteousness. Christ says of this worship, "For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in Him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day" (John 6:40). And the Father says, "This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him" (Matthew 17:5).

LECTIONARY SUMMARY

Deuteronomy 30:15–20; 1 Corinthians 3:1–9; Matthew 5:21–37

Christ Sets Life before Us so that We Can Walk in His Ways

The God who reveals Himself in His incarnate Son promises life and blessing to all who obey His commandments “by loving the LORD your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his rules” (Deut. 30:16). However, we are “people of the flesh” and “infants in Christ” (1 Cor. 3:1) among whom “there is jealousy and strife” (1 Cor. 3:3). Jesus must instruct us against the human ways of anger, adultery, divorce, and false witness (Matt. 5:21-37), because all who live in these ways “shall surely perish” (Deut. 30:18). On the cross He died to forgive our sins and free us from the ways of curse and death. Since Jesus Christ is our “life and length of days” (Deut. 30:20), we can be reconciled to our brother, live in chastity and marital faithfulness, and speak with honesty. He who serves from His cross also offers His gift of reconciliation at His altar, and we can be at peace with our brothers and sisters in Christ who are “God’s field, God’s building” (1 Cor. 3:9).

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Large Catechism, The Ten Commandments: Fifth Commandment, paragraphs 179-183

You shall not murder.

We have finished teaching about temporal government, that is, the divine and the parental authority and obedience. But now we learn how we should live with our neighbor. Therefore, God and government are not included in this commandment. Nor is the power to kill taken away, which God and government have. To punish evildoers, God has delegated His authority to the government, not parents. What is forbidden in this commandment is forbidden to the individual in his relationship with anyone else, but not to the government.

This commandment is easy enough, because we hear it each year in the Gospel of Matthew 5:20-26, where Christ Himself explains and sums it up. He says that we must not kill, neither with hand, heart, mouth, signs, gestures, help, nor counsel. Therefore, this commandment forbids everyone to be angry, except those who are in the place of God, that is, parents and the government. For it is proper for God and for everyone who is in a divine estate to be angry, to rebuke, and to punish because of those very persons who transgress this and the other commandments [Romans 13:4].

The need of this commandment is that God knows that the world is evil [Galatians 1:4], and that this life has much unhappiness. Therefore, He has set up the commandments between the good people and the evil.

SYNOD, DISTRICT, & PARTNERSHIP NEWS

Shrove Tuesday Partnership Event - Our St. John's/Trinity partnership is hosting a Shrove Tuesday pancake supper again this year on Tuesday, February 25th at 6:00 p.m. at Trinity.  The event will begin in the sanctuary at 6:00 with a time of prayer and confession and absolution, and continue with a pancake supper in the Life Center at 6:15.  During the supper we will also have fliers available with suggestions for how you might pray, fast, and show mercy during the upcoming season of Lent.  This event is free and the community is welcome to attend.

Pastor’s Day on the Hill - On February 13th Pastor Cowell along with many LCMS pastors from Iowa District West and East will join members of Lutheran Family Service in Des Moines to pray and show our support of God’s gift of life from conception to natural death.  During this time we will meet with and encourage our 10 LCMS Iowa legislatures in their work of defending life in our state.  The pastors will also have an opportunity to speak with their local representatives and let them know that the people of our congregations oppose murder in all instances, namely the abortion of infants and the assisted suicide of the elderly, depressed, and mentally disabled.  You can help by praying that God continue to bless the work of our 10 LCMS legislatures, our pro-life governor, and Lutheran Family Service in the field of defending the lives of the pre-born and the elderly.

Building Healthy Families:  Valentine’s Day is coming soon! This year, try something new: Go through the entire day WITHOUT saying, “I love you!”  What? Instead, look for other ways to say it! How about, “My life is better because you are in it,” or “I am so proud that you are my daughter,” or “I am so thankful that God brought you into my life.” Be creative! And remember – on Valentine’s Day and always - how much you are loved by your Father (John 15:9-17) Lutheran Family Service  www.LutheranFamilyService.org

LECTIONARY SUMMARY

Isaiah 58:3–9a; 1 Corinthians 2:1–16; Matthew 5:13–20

The Righteousness of Christ

Jesus warns that “unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 5:20), but He also calls His imperfect people “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world” (Matt. 5:13, 14). That’s because the Lord Jesus came not to abolish the Law or the Prophets, “but to fulfill them” (Matt. 5:17) in perfect faith and love. Since He does and teaches all of God’s commandments, He is “called great in the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 5:19). God manifests His “demonstration of the Spirit and of power” in “Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Cor. 2:2-4) and through the preaching of the Gospel gives His “secret and hidden wisdom” (1 Cor. 2:7). Christ gives this perfect righteousness to His people and it leads them to true fasting, which is “to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free” (Is. 58:6) and “to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house” (Is. 58:7).

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Apology of the Augsburg Confession, Article XXVII: Monastic Vows, paragraphs 4-6, 8-9

It is clear how much hypocrisy, ambition, and greed there are in the monasteries, how much ignorance and cruelty exists among all the unlearned, what pride there is in their sermons, and how they continually create new ways of making money. There are other faults, which we do not care to mention. Monasteries were schools for Christian instruction; now they have deteriorated… All the most wealthy monasteries support only a lazy crowd, which gorges itself upon the public alms of the Church. Christ, however, teaches that the salt that has lost its savor should be cast out and be trodden underfoot (Matthew 5:13). By such morals the monks are singing their own fate ‹a requiem, and it will soon be over with them›… Certainly we do not accuse every one of them, for here and there some good men in the monasteries decide fairly about human and "factitious" services, as some writers call them, and do not approve the cruelty exercised by the hypocrites among them.

Now we are discussing the kind of teaching that the writers of the Confutation defend: Can these services merit the forgiveness of sins and justification? Are they satisfactions for sins? Are they equal to Baptism? Are they the obedience to basic rules and counsels? Do they have the merits of super-abundance? Do these merits, when applied to others, save them?
