THE FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT

LECTIONARY SUMMARY

The Lord Comes in Meekness and Humility to Save Us Now

The Lord Jesus enters Jerusalem “humble, and mounted on a donkey,” riding on “a beast of burden” (Matt. 21:5), as He Himself bears the sins of the world in His body. Now He comes by the ministry of the Gospel to save us from sin, death, the devil and hell. Therefore, we sing, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Matt. 21:9). For we are called “to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob,” His Holy Church, “that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths” (Is. 2:3). By His Word, we “walk in the light of the Lord” (Is. 2:5). That is to live in love, which “does no wrong to a neighbor” (Rom. 13:10). We “cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light,” for “salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed” (Rom. 13:11, 12). Hence, the entire Christian life is a time to wake and watch, “for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming” (Matt. 24:42).

SERMON SENTENCE

Jesus traveled to Bethlehem so that He could travel to Jerusalem, so that He could travel to you as your incarnate, crucified, and risen King.

LESSON ON THE LITURGY

The First Sunday in Advent

The traditional Gospel lesson for the First Sunday in Advent is always the account of the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem on the week of His crucifixion.  Does that choice of Scripture seem strange to you? Remember that Advent is Latin for coming.  In the season of Advent we prepare to celebrate and receive Jesus coming to us in three ways: in the manger, on the altar, and in the clouds on the Last Day. The account of Jesus coming to Jerusalem and then to the cross is the event that gives these three advents their purpose and power, making this text a fitting start to the Advent season!

CHAT WITH THE CHURCH FATHERS

“For the Word perceived that death was the only way that the corruption of people could be undone. However, it was impossible for the Word to suffer death, being immortal and Son of the Father. Therefore, he takes to himself a body capable of death, so that such a body, by partaking of the Word who is above all, might be worthy to die in the stead of all, and might, because of the Word that had come to dwell in it, remain incorruptible. In this way, the corruption of all might be checked by the grace of the resurrection. By offering to death the body he himself had taken, as an offering and sacrifice free from any stain, he got rid of death for all his peers by offering an equivalent. For the Word of God, which by his very nature is over everything, by offering his own temple and bodily vessel for the life of all, satisfied the debt by his death. And thus he, the incorruptible Son of God, joined with all by a similar nature, naturally clothed all with incorruption and the promise of the resurrection. For the actual corruption in death no longer has a hold on humanity because of the Word which, by his one body, has come to dwell among them.” - Athanasius, On the Incarnation 9.1-4, qtd. in ACCS: John 1-10, p. 41.

LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Last Sunday)

Old Testament: Malachi 3:13-18

“Then once more you shall see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve Him.”

Epistle: Colossians 1:13-20

God has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Gospel: Luke 23:27-43

Jesus is crucified alongside two criminals, and Jesus says to the one who prays to Him: “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“‘Today you will be with me in paradise.’ Through saying this, he also gave to all those who believe and confess access to the entrance that Adam previously had closed by sinning. Who else could remove ‘the flaming turning sword which was placed to guard the tree of life’ and the gates of paradise? What other sentinel was able to turn the ‘cherubim’ from their incessant vigil, except only he to whom ‘was given all power in heaven and in earth?’ No one else besides him could do these things.” - Origen, Homilies on Leviticus 9.5, qtd. in ACCS: Luke, p. 365

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Large Catechism, Part V: Sacrament of the Altar, paragraphs 28-31

Our wise spirits with their great art and wisdom cry, "How can bread and wine forgive sins or strengthen faith?" They know that we do not say this about bread and wine. But we speak about the bread and wine that is Christ's body and blood and has the words attached to it. That, we say, is truly the treasure—and nothing else—through which such forgiveness is gained. Now the only way this treasure is passed along and made our very own is in the words "Given … and shed for you." For in the words you have both truths, that it is Christ's body and blood, and that it is yours as a treasure and gift. Now Christ's body can never be an unfruitful, empty thing that does or profits nothing. Yet, no matter how great the treasure is in itself, it must be included in the Word and administered to us. Otherwise we would never be able to know or seek it.

It is useless talk when they say that Christ's body and blood are not given and shed for us in the Lord's Supper, so we could not have forgiveness of sins in the Sacrament. Although the work is done and the forgiveness of sins is secured by the cross, it cannot come to us in any other way than through the Word. We know that such a thing was accomplished to be given to us, by preaching the oral Word. How do they know or make the forgiveness their own, unless they believe the Gospel?

LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Proper 28)

Old Testament: Malachi 4:1-6

Behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble.

Epistle: 2 Thessalonians 3:1-13

If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.

Gospel: Luke 21:5-36

Jesus instructs the people how to anticipate the Last Day.

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“We should have no doubt that our mortal flesh also will rise again at the end of the world. [...] This is the Christian faith. This is the Catholic faith. This is the apostolic faith. Believe Christ when he says, ‘Not a hair of your head shall perish.’ Putting aside all unbelief, consider how valuable you are. How can our Redeemer despise any person when he cannot despise a hair of that person’s head? How are we going to doubt that he intends to give eternal life to our soul and body? He took on a soul and body in which to die for us, which he laid down for us when he died and which he took up again that we might not fear death.” - Augustine, Sermon 214.11-2, qtd. in ACCS: Luke, p. 321

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

Church Ceilings

We all know that church ceilings often look like upside-down boats.  But have you also noticed how church ceilings (like St. John’s) often have “ribs” that, when standing in the back of the church, give the sense of a picture frame within a picture frame within a picture frame.  At the altar the rib typically narrows and is distinguished from the others (in our case by being white instead of brown).  This is meant to create the effect of walking into an entirely different realm, or dimension, as one approaches the altar.  That is exactly what happens as we come up for Communion.  We place one foot on earth and one foot into heaven and receive the mystery of the truly divine and truly human Christ. - Year C, Proper 28

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Apology of the Augsburg Confession, Article V: Love and Fulfilling the Law, para. 242-245

Paul says, "There is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me" (2 Ti. 4:8). The justified are due the crown because of the promise. Saints should know this promise, and labor not for their own profit, but for God's glory. Saints should know God's will: He desires to aid, to deliver, and to protect them. Although the perfect hear the mention of penalties and rewards in one way, the weak hear it in another way. The weak labor for their own advantage. Yet the preaching of rewards and punishments is necessary. God's wrath is set forth in the preaching of punishments. This applies to repentance. Grace is set forth in the preaching of rewards. Scripture offers grace together with other rewards. We find this in Is. 58:8-14. We also affirm that although justification and eternal life go along with faith, nevertheless, good works merit other bodily and spiritual rewards and degrees of reward. According to 1 Co. 3:8, "Each will receive his wages according to his labor." The righteousness of the Gospel, which has to do with the promise of grace, freely receives justification and new life. But the fulfilling of the Law, which follows faith, has to do with the Law. In it a reward is offered and is due according to our works. Those who earn this are justified before they do the Law.
