Adult Bible Class For the next few weeks we will be studying our Synod’s Explanation of the Small Catechism published in 2017.  These are the 374 questions in the back of Luther’s Small Catechism which help us apply the six chief parts of the Catechism to issues of our current church and culture.

A Religion School/Confirmation Students and Parents Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 5th at 6:30 p.m.  If you and your child are not able to attend, please let Pastor know ahead of time.

Dear Friends at St. John's--   Wow!  We cannot fully express our sincere gratitude for your beautifully written cards and extremely generous gifts.  We are completely humbled and thankful for the kindness that you have shown to our family.  The gifts you have given to us will be put to good use, as we continue along this new path in life.  Cal's new diagnosis has truly changed our lives this past month, but having the support of this community and our church's partnership has truly helped ease our pain.  We so greatly appreciate your prayers for him as we continue to navigate through the possible twists and turns that this diagnosis brings.  Your generous financial support and prayers is something that we will never forget.  We are thankful that God has placed our family in your path at St. John's.  Thank you for loving us and thank you so very much for your kindness and generosity!        Sincerely,   Eric, Jill, Julia, Cal, and Hazel Hauan

Lessons on the Liturgy – Kneeling at Communion

In the old days people would kneel when a king entered his throne room.  We do the same when Christ our King comes to us at the Lord’s Supper.  Pastor kneels to one knee as the Body and Blood of Jesus enter the room in the Words of Institution (the congregation can also bow at this time).  Then as we receive the Body and Blood of Jesus we show our greatest reverence to our king and kneel with both knees.

Breakfast – The Burt City Council will be hosting a Breakfast on Saturday,  September 8th  from 8 a.m. to noon at the Burt Activity Complex. Menu: Pancakes, Eggs, Sausages and Drink.  A Free Will donation will be taken with the proceeds going to upkeep of the Burt Activity Complex.

August 26, 2018

Summer Midweek Divine Services are finished for the year.  We look forward to doing this again in 2019.

Adult Bible Class - Next week we are going to have an "ask the pastor" version of adult Bible study.  I will be answering a couple questions from members that have been sitting on my desk for a while, and I encourage you to bring new questions to discuss as well.  Questions can range from the interpretation of a Bible verse, a Christian interpretation of current events, matters of the Christian life, the liturgy, what Lutherans believe about [fill in the blank]. Anything goes!

A Religion School/Confirmation Students and Parents Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 5th at 6:30 p.m.  If you and your child are not able to attend, please let Pastor know ahead of time.

Rally Day Partnership Picnic - Trinity and St. John's are co-hosting a prayer service and picnic to kick off the new year of Sunday School and midweek Christian education.  The event will be held Sunday, September 9 at 10:30 a.m. at Smith Lake near the East shelter (that's the one near the entrance).  We will begin with a brief service at 10:30 which will include the installation of Sunday School teachers and presentation of Bibles and Catechisms, followed by a picnic lunch and games.  Food and drink will be provided, but you are encouraged to bring a dessert to share and lawn chairs or blankets to sit on.  The offering collected during the service will go toward the missions that the Trinity and St. John's Sunday Schools will be sending their offerings for the year.  We will introduce these missions during the service.  Keep in mind that this would be a great event to invite friends or family that aren't already connected with a church!  (Flyers available on the back table)

* St. John’s will have our regularly scheduled service at 9:00 a.m. at the church on Sep. 9th.

Lessons on the Liturgy – The Stole

Like many of the vestments of the church, the origins and original purpose of the stole is complicated.  However there is much that we can learn from its use among pastors today. The stole distinguishes its wearer as one called to the office of the holy ministry.  When a pastor wears a stole he gives you confidence that he is the man who has been called by God to deliver God’s gifts to you. Also, the stole happens to look like a yoke.  Your pastor has been yoked by Christ for service to his people. Therefore the words and actions of the pastor are never his own, but Christ’s words and deeds which the pastor delivers to you.

Birthday – On Sunday, September 2nd Helen Smith will be celebrating her 91st Birthday.  Cards and Birthday wishes can reach her at Windsor Manor #413, 521 Finn Drive, Algona, Iowa 50511.

Special Offering We praise God that Cal Hauan has received a favorable report concerning tests done for his adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) in that the disease has currently had no adverse effects on his brain.  This gives them great hope for being able to successfully manage the disease.  The next steps for Cal include another MRI in 3 months, a potential stem cell transplant, and an MRI every 6 months thereafter.  In order to ease the financial burden of these several unexpected trips to Mayo Clinic, St. John’s will take a door offering for the Hauan family for the next two weeks. Lessons on the Liturgy – The Cassock and Surplice

The black gown that Pastor wears is called a cassock.  The white garment on top of it is a surplice. There is a long and complicated history as to how pastors came to wear the cassock and surplice, but these vestments also teach two simple lessons.  Notice how the white vestment covers the black, just as the righteousness of Christ covers our sin in Baptism. Notice also that when Pastor is wearing his vestments you can only see his head and his hands.  In this way you are drawn to focus on his head (particularly his mouth) which proclaims God’s Word to you and his hands which deliver God’s Sacraments and blessing to you.

Lessons on the Liturgy - INRI

Often times the letters INRI are hung above Christ on crucifixes and artwork.  These four letters are an abbreviation of the title in Latin that Pontius Pilate had posted on Jesus’ cross as he was crucified: Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum.  In English that’s: Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.  That title of which the Jews protested, is a title in which we rejoice.  Jesus is not only king of the Jews, but the king of all creation who reigns forgiveness and peace from the throne of the cross and the kingdom of his resurrection.

Lessons on the Liturgy - I-H-S

The letters “I-H-S” are often found on liturgical artwork in sanctuaries.  The symbol is present in the middle of our altar cross at St. John’s. These are the first two letters and the last letter of “Jesus” as it is rendered in the Greek language, which was a common way of abbreviating a name in the old days.  Therefore the letters “IHS” in a sanctuary is an indication that this a place where the name of Jesus is proclaimed and placed on us in Word and Sacrament.
