LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

VDMA

VDMA is an acronym for the Latin phrase: Verbum Domini Manet in Aeternum (the Word of the Lord remains forever).  This phrase comes from both Isaiah 40:8 and 1 Peter 1:24-25 in Holy Scripture.  During the Lutheran Reformation, VDMA became somewhat of a logo for the Lutherans.  Around 1522, Frederick the Wise of Saxony had the letters sewn on the sleeve of all the servants of his court.  VDMA later appeared on much of the military equipment of the Schmalkaldic League, which was a group of Lutheran princes who joined together to defend their lands from the Roman Catholic Emperor on the occasion that he would try to abolish Lutheranism by violent force. Today Lutherans continue to bear the letters VDMA as we confess that while earthly kingdoms, governments, and cultures will rise and fall, the Word of the Lord remains forever.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Apology of the Augsburg Confession, Article V: Love and Fulfilling the Law, para. 176

We are counted righteous, not because of the Law, but because of Christ. His merits are granted us, if we believe on Him. We are not justified by the Law, because human nature cannot keep God's Law and cannot love God. We are justified from the promise, in which, for Christ's sake, reconciliation, righteousness, and eternal life have been promised. If anyone has considered these foundations, he will easily understand that justification must necessarily be attributed to faith. It is not in vain that Christ has been promised and set forth, that He has been born and has suffered and been raised again. The promise of grace in Christ is not in vain. The promise should be received through faith, as 1 John 5:10-12 says:

Whoever does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning His Son. And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

Christ says, "If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed" (John 8:36). Paul says, "Through Him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand" (Romans 5:2). By faith in Christ the promise of forgiveness of sins and of righteousness is received.

Did You Know - “It’s more important what God thinks of you than what others think of you.” How often have you heard (or said) these words? Yet so often we slip into the habit of living for the approval of others. In Matthew 6, Jesus tells us not to do things for the approval of men. In the same chapter, He assures us that our Father, who sees and knows us inside out, is the One who can and will meet all our needs, including our need to be recognized, valued, and loved. Whew! What a relief! Life begins to look different (and much better!) when seen through the eyes of faith in our loving, gracious, living and forgiving God. Live in the light of that great love this week! LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Proper 25)

Gospel: Luke 18:9-17

Jesus tells the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector praying in the temple and instructs His disciples to let the children come to Him.

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

What is the difference between the Law and the Gospel?

The Law teaches what we are to do and not to do; the Gospel teaches what God has done, and still does, in Jesus, for our salvation.  The Law shows us our sin and the wrath of God; the Gospel shows us our Savior and brings God’s grace and favor.  The Law must be proclaimed to all people, but especially to sinners who refuse to repent; the Gospel must be proclaimed to sinners who are troubled by their sins.  See Romans 3:20; John 6:63; Romans 1:16. - An Explanation of the Small Catechism (2017), p. 49

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Apology of the Augsburg Confession, Article V (III): Love & Fulfilling the Law, para. 209-212

flesh and righteousness of the flesh cannot endure the judgment of God. Jonah 2:8 also says: They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy, i.e., all confidence is vain, except confidence in mercy; mercy delivers us; our own merits, our own efforts, do not.  Accordingly, Daniel, also prays, (Dan. 9:18):

For we do not present our supplications before Thee for our righteousnesses, but for Thy great mercies. O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do it; defer not for Thine own sake, O my God; for Thy city and Thy people are called by Thy name.

Thus Daniel teaches us in praying to lay hold upon mercy, i.e., to trust in God’s mercy, and not to trust in our own merits before God. We also wonder what our adversaries do in prayer, if, indeed; the profane men ever ask anything of God. If they declare that they are worthy because they have love and good works, and ask for grace as a debt, they pray precisely like the Pharisee in Luke 18:11, who says: I am not as other men are. He who thus prays for grace, and does not rely upon God’s mercy, treats Christ with dishonor, who, since He is our High Priest, intercedes for us. Thus, therefore, prayer relies upon God’s mercy, when we believe that we are heard for the sake of Christ, the High Priest, as He Himself says, John 14:13: Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in My name, He will give it you. In My, name, He says, because without this High Priest we cannot approach the Father.

Building Healthy Families: A large research study recently asked thousands of children this one question: If you were granted one wish about your parents, what would it be? What would you guess was their answer…more time together...more money…more vacations? All wrong. The kids’ number one wish was that their parents would be less tired and less stressed. How about taking your Savior up on His personal invitation: Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28) Remember that LFS counselors who share your faith and values are here to here to help you re-set. Lutheran Family Service - www.LutheranFamilyService.org.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Large Catechism, Part III: The Lord’s Prayer, paragraphs 8-11

Praying, as the Second Commandment teaches, is to call upon God in every need. He requires this of us and has not left it to our choice. But it is our duty and obligation to pray, if we would be Christians, just as it is our duty and obligation to obey our parents and the government. For by calling upon God's name and praying, His name is honored and used well. This you must note above all things, so that you may silence and reject thoughts that would keep us from prayer. Prayer is not left to my will to do it or leave it undone, but it shall and must be offered at the risk of God's wrath and displeasure.

Cast away the thoughts that would keep us from praying, as though it does not matter if we do not pray, or as though prayer was commanded for those who are holier and in better favor with God than we are. The human heart is by nature so hopeless that it always flees from God and imagines that He does not desire our prayer, because we are sinners and have earned nothing but wrath. Against such thoughts we should remember this commandment and turn to God, so that we may not stir up His anger more by such disobedience. He will not cast us away. This is true even though we are sinners. But instead He draws us to Himself, so that we might humble ourselves before Him, bewail our misery and pray for grace and help.
