The Cassock and Surplice

The black gown that Pastor wears is called a cassock.  The white garment on top of it is a surplice.  There is a long and complicated history as to how pastors came to wear the cassock and surplice, but these vestments also teach two simple lessons.  Notice how the white vestment covers the black, just as the righteousness of Christ covers our sin in Baptism.  Notice also that when Pastor is wearing his vestments you can only see his head and his hands.  In this way you are drawn to focus on his head (particularly his mouth) which proclaims God’s Word to you and his hands which deliver God’s Sacraments and blessing to you.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Formula of Concord, Solid Declaration, Article VI: The Third Use of God's Law, para. 21-23

The Law is also necessary in and with believers' good works. Otherwise, a person can easily imagine that his work and life are entirely pure and perfect. God's Law prescribes good works to believers in this way: it shows and indicates at the same time, as in a mirror, that in this life works are still imperfect and impure in us. Paul recognizes from the Law that his good works are imperfect (Romans 7:7-13).

Although in this life the good works of believers are imperfect and impure because of sin in the flesh, nevertheless they are acceptable and well pleasing to God. However, the Law does not teach how and why the good works of believers are acceptable. It demands a completely perfect, pure obedience if it is to please God. But the Gospel teaches that our spiritual offerings are acceptable to God through faith for Christ's sake (1 Peter 2:5; Hebrews 11:4;13:5). In this way Christians are not under the Law, but under grace (Romans 6:14). For by faith in Christ the persons are freed from the Law's curse and condemnation. Their good works, although they are still imperfect and impure, are acceptable to God through Christ. Because, in so far as they have been born anew according to the inner man, they do what is pleasing to God. They act not by coercio

The Presentation of the Augsburg Confession

This Thursday, June 25th we celebrate the presentation of the Augsburg Confession to Emperor Charles V in 1530.  One interesting historical note about the day is that the Emperor decided to move the assembly from the much larger hall where the other business of the diet (meeting) had taken place into the palace chapel for the reading of the document by the Lutherans.  This was so that far less people could be present to hear the Lutheran’s confession of faith as it was read.  Nevertheless, it is said that Christian Beyer, who read the Augsburg Confession to Emperor Charles, spoke in such a loud and distinct voice that even the crowd listening through the open windows could hear every word.  May God grant us Lutherans boldness to proclaim the truth of His Word regardless of the barriers in our way.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Large Catechism, Ten Commandments, paragraphs 10, 12-15

1. "You shall have no other gods."

To "have a god" is to have something in which the heart entirely trusts. [...] Here belong such people as sorcerers, whose idolatry is most great. They make a deal with the devil, in order that he may give them plenty of money or help them in love affairs, preserve their cattle, restore to them lost possessions, and so forth. For all such people place their heart and trust elsewhere than in the true God. They look to Him for nothing good, nor do they seek good from Him.

So you can easily understand what and how much this commandment requires. A person's entire heart and all his confidence must be placed in God alone and in no one else. For to "have" God is not to take hold of Him with our hands or to put Him in a bag . Instead, to "have" Him means that the heart takes hold of Him and clings to Him. To cling to Him with the heart is nothing else than to trust in Him entirely. For this reason God wishes to turn us away from everything else that exists outside of Him and to draw us to Himself [John 6:44]. For He is the only eternal good [Matthew 19:17]. It is as though He would say, "Whatever you have previously sought from the saints, or for whatever things you have trusted in money or anything else, expect it all from Me. Think of Me as the one who will help you and pour out upon you richly all good things."

Offerings and alms during our time away – We thank God for blessing us with the tools and resources to continue the distribution of His grace at St. John’s, and we thank God for blessing us with faithful Christians to fund our ministry and operational expenses.  Keep up the good work! Also note that if you or your family has encountered any financial hardship during this time, don’t hesitate to contact Pastor Cowell to see if our congregation can help in any way.

St. John’s Vacation Bible School - This year St. John’s is hosting a "family VBS."  This means that we are encouraging all our members and friends of all ages to join the kids as we learn what it means to be a Christian family as well as a Christian church family.  The VBS will be on four Wednesday evenings from 5:30-7:30, with supper being at 5:30.  Our big uncertainty right now is when we will be able to have our first VBS Wednesday!  We will let you know as soon as we have the dates set.  If you would like to volunteer at the VBS in any capacity, please let Pastor or a member of the Board of Education know and we’ll find you a spot to serve.

St. John’s T-Shirts! - St. John’s decided to take advantage of a great deal on bulk-order T-shirts from Threads in Algona.  Below is a design.  They are dark blue and are available in all standard sizes (and fit according to standard sizes).  Call or text Hannah Cowell at 712-294-4962 by Monday, June 15th to order.  All sizes are $6.  You can pay Hannah either when you order or when you receive the shirt near the end of June.

Did You Know? The Greek equivalent to the Hebrew for “comfort” is “paraclete.” A literal meaning is someone called alongside to speak for you, defend you, help you. Not surprising then that Scripture gives the name “paraclete,” Comforter, to the Holy Spirit. Jesus sent Him to walk beside us and help us. LFS uses 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 as our theme verse. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”  Our mission statement flows from this. “We walk with people who are experiencing hard times and are there for them just as God has been there for us.” Reach out to us any time. We’re here to help!

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

Calling a Pastor

Article XIV of the Augsburg Confession says: “Our churches teach that no one should publicly teach in the Church, or administer the Sacraments, without a rightly ordered call.” It is easy to see the “rightly ordered” call of the Twelve Apostles in our Gospel lesson today (Matthew 10) because that call comes from the mouth of Jesus Himself!  Today in the Church we define a man as receiving a rightly ordered call into the ministry of Christ’s Word and Sacrament when he has been adequately trained and examined, which usually happens at an LCMS seminary, and then is called by a congregation and ordained into the office of the Holy Ministry with the approval and witness of fellow ministers.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Large Catechism, The Creed: Article III, paragraphs 34, 51-53

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints. [...]

This is the meaning and substance: I believe that there is upon earth a little holy group and congregation of pure saints, under one head, even Christ. This group is called together by the Holy Spirit in one faith, one mind, and understanding, with many different gifts, yet agreeing in love, without sects or schisms. I am also a part and member of this same group, a sharer and joint owner of all the goods it possesses. I am brought to it and incorporated into it by the Holy Spirit through having heard and continuing to hear God's Word, which is the beginning of entering it. In the past, before we had attained to this, we were altogether of the devil, knowing nothing about God and about Christ. So, until the Last Day, the Holy Spirit abides with the holy congregation or Christendom. Through this congregation He brings us to Christ and He teaches us the Word. By the Word He works and promotes sanctification, causing this congregation daily to grow and to become strong in the faith and its fruit, which He produces.
