Thank You! On behalf of the David’s Harp Board of Directors and staff I want to thank you sincerely for your generous gift at Christmastime. Your support is greatly appreciated and extremely helpful!  We are currently in the middle of working on our first liturgy volume that will include settings for Divine Service III and Matins. This volume will be just like our “Hymns of the Season” volumes in the sense of faded musical settings. We know of the great need for simplified liturgies all over the world, in both national and international missions. We pray this volume will be a blessing to the church. Your donation is going to help bring this volume to the church at Easter of this year. God be praised! The Lord bless and keep you all!

LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Epiphany 4)

Old Testament: Jeremiah 1:4-10 (17-19)

The Lord calls Jeremiah to be a prophet to the people.

Epistle: 1 Corinthians 12:31b-13:13

St. Paul explains the substance and importance of love.

Gospel: Luke 4:31-44

Jesus heals a man with an unclean demon and many others.

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“[Jesus] would not permit the unclean demons to confess him. It was not right for them to usurp the glory of the apostolic office or to talk of the mystery of Christ with polluted tongues. Yes, nothing they say is true. Let no one trust them. Light cannot be recognized with the help of darkness, as the disciple of Christ teaches us, where he says, ‘What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?’” - Cyril of Alexandria, Commentary on Luke, Homily 12, qtd. in ACCS: Luke, 85.

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

Rubrics

Rubric is Latin for “red”.  These are the liturgical instructions in our hymnal that are written in red.  Rubrics often give us direction on how to move during the service.  These rubrics are useful because they allow the liturgy to flow like a beautiful and well-rehearsed symphony rather than having the pastor frequently pause the liturgy to direct traffic. – The content of this lesson comes from Scot Kinnaman, Worshiping with Angels and Archangels: An Introduction to the Divine Service, 7.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Smalcald Articles, Part 3, Article III: Repentance, paragraphs 1-4

The New Testament keeps and urges this office ‹of the Law›, as St. Paul says, "The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men". Also, "the whole world may be accountable to God….No human being will be justified in His sight." And, Christ says, the Holy Spirit will convict the world of sin.

This is God's thunderbolt. By the Law He strikes down both obvious sinners and false saints. He declares no one to be in the right, but drives them all together to terror and despair. Jeremiah says, "Is not My word like… a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?" This is not active contrition or manufactured repentance. It is passive contrition, true sorrow of heart, suffering, and the sensation of death.

This is what true repentance means. Here a person needs to hear something like this, "You are all of no account, whether you are obvious sinners or saints ‹in your own opinions›. You have to become different from what you are now. You have to act differently than you are now acting, whether you are as great, wise, powerful, and holy as you can be. Here no one is godly."

To the Law, the New Testament immediately adds the consoling promise of grace through the Gospel. Christ declares, "Repent and believe in the gospel". Become different, act differently, and believe My promise.

Gospel: Luke 4:16-30

Jesus reads from Isaiah in the synagogue in Nazareth and is rejected in His hometown.

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“[Jesus] began to preach the gospel to the poor, putting in the forefront of his blessings: ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.’ Yes, he proclaimed forgiveness to those who were hampered by evil spirits and bound for a long time like slaves by demons. He invited all to be free and to escape from the bonds of sin, when he said, ‘Come to me, all you that labor, and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you.’” - Eusebius, Proof of the Gospel 3.1.88C-89A, qtd. in ACCS: Luke, 80.

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

Chanting

Chanting in church is strange, and it’s supposed to be!  Chanting the liturgy lets us know that something is happening at church that doesn’t happen anywhere else on earth.  These are the words of faith, the words of the Holy Spirit. The liturgy, especially the Psalms, have been chanted from the moment they were written. When St. Gregory the Great (c. 600 A.D.) finally began to write down these ancient psalm tones, he used the tones that had been passed down to him from the Jewish synagogue. So when we use Gregorian chants in our liturgy we are likely singing the Psalms in a similar way to how King David, and how Christ himself, sang them.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Large Catechism, The Ten Commandments, paragraphs 85-87

Keeping of the Sabbath is not restricted to a certain time, as with the Jewish people. It does not have to be just on this or that day. For in itself no one day is better than another. Instead, this should be done daily. However, since the masses of people cannot attend every day, there must be at least one day in the week set apart. From ancient times Sunday ‹the Lord's Day› has been appointed for this purpose. So we also should continue to do the same, in order that everything may be done in an orderly way.

This is the simple meaning of the commandment: People must have holidays. Such observances should be devoted to hearing God's Word so that the special function of this day of rest should be the ministry of the Word for the young and the mass of poor people [Ne. 8:2-3, 8]. Yet the resting should not be strictly understood to forbid any work that comes up, which cannot be avoided.

When someone asks, "What is meant by the commandment: You shall sanctify the holy day?" Answer like this, "To sanctify the holy day is the same as to keep it holy." "But what is meant by keeping it holy?" "Nothing else than to be occupied with holy words, works, and life." For the day needs no sanctification of itself. It has been created holy in itself. But God desires the day to be holy to you. It becomes holy or unholy because of you, whether you are occupied with things that are holy or unholy.

LECTIONARY SUMMARY (Epiphany 2)

Old Testament: Isaiah 62:1-5

The Lord promises that Israel will once again become a delight to Him.

Epistle: 1 Corinthians 12:1-11

“There are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.”

Gospel: John 2:1-11

Jesus turns water into wine at the wedding at Cana.

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“This transformation of the water from its own substance into another testified to the powerful presence of the Creator. Only he who had made it out of nothing could change water into something whole sue was quite different. Dearly beloved, have no doubt that he who changed water into wine is the same as he who from the beginning has thickened it into snow and hardened it into ice. It is he who changed it into blood for the Egyptians and bade it flow from the dry rock for the thirsty Hebrews.” - Maximus of Turin, Sermon 23, qtd. in ACCS: John 1-10, 96.

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

Red or White Wine at Communion?

Our Lord didn’t specify that we use a certain type of wine  for the Lord’s Supper: only that we use wine just as He did.  Whether we use red or white wine, merlot or zinfandel, is up to our own discretion.  Lutherans do, however, have an interesting history concerning our choice of wine.  During the Reformation other Protestant churches required the use of red wine during the Lord’s Supper.  Since they believed the wine only represented Jesus’ blood as a metaphor then the wine should only be red because it more closely represents blood (they still used wine because unfermented grape juice didn’t exist until the 1900’s).  In reply many Lutherans resolved to use only white wine for the Lord’s Supper to confess that Christ can make His blood present in the wine of His Supper no matter the color of the wine!

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Solid Declaration of the Formula of Concord, Article VIII: The Person of Christ, para. 25-26

[Jesus] did all His miracles by the power of this personal union. He showed His divine majesty, according to His pleasure, when and as He willed. He did this not just after His resurrection and ascension, but also in His state of humiliation. For example:

(a) At the wedding at Cana of Galilee

(b) When He was twelve years old, among the learned

(c) In the garden, when with a word He cast His enemies to the ground

(d) In death, when He died not simply as any other man, but in and with His death conquered sin, death, devil, hell, and eternal damnation

The human nature alone would not have been able to do these miracles if it had not been personally united and had communion with the divine nature.
