Announcements

September 2, 2018

Adult Bible Class For the next few weeks we will be studying our Synod’s Explanation of the Small Catechism published in 2017.  These are the 374 questions in the back of Luther’s Small Catechism which help us apply the six chief parts of the Catechism to issues of our current church and culture.

A Religion School/Confirmation Students and Parents Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 5th at 6:30 p.m.  If you and your child are not able to attend, please let Pastor know ahead of time.

Rally Day Partnership Picnic - Trinity and St. John's are co-hosting a prayer service and picnic to kick off the new year of Sunday School and midweek Christian education.  The event will be held Sunday, September 9 at 10:30 a.m. at Smith Lake near the East shelter (that's the one near the entrance).  We will begin with a brief service at 10:30 which will include the installation of Sunday School teachers and presentation of Bibles and Catechisms, followed by a picnic lunch and games.  Food and drink will be provided, but you are encouraged to bring a dessert to share and lawn chairs or blankets to sit on.  The offering collected during the service will go toward the missions that the Trinity and St. John's Sunday Schools will be sending their offerings for the year.  We will introduce these missions during the service.  Keep in mind that this would be a great event to invite friends or family that aren't already connected with a church!  (Flyers available on the back table)

* St. John’s will have our regularly scheduled service at 9:00 a.m. at the church on Sep. 9th.

Ladies Aid will meet on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. September 6, 2018.  Barb Harms, Hostess, Bev Skadburg, devotions and Pastor Cowell the Bible Study.

Dear Friends at St. John's--   Wow!  We cannot fully express our sincere gratitude for your beautifully written cards and extremely generous gifts.  We are completely humbled and thankful for the kindness that you have shown to our family.  The gifts you have given to us will be put to good use, as we continue along this new path in life.  Cal's new diagnosis has truly changed our lives this past month, but having the support of this community and our church's partnership has truly helped ease our pain.  We so greatly appreciate your prayers for him as we continue to navigate through the possible twists and turns that this diagnosis brings.  Your generous financial support and prayers is something that we will never forget.  We are thankful that God has placed our family in your path at St. John's.  Thank you for loving us and thank you so very much for your kindness and generosity!        Sincerely,   Eric, Jill, Julia, Cal, and Hazel Hauan

Birthday – Helen Smith is celebrating her 91st Birthday today.  Cards, and Birthday wishes can reach her at Windsor Manor #413, 521 Finn Drive, Algona, Iowa 50511.

Lessons on the Liturgy – Kneeling at Communion

In the old days people would kneel when a king entered his throne room.  We do the same when Christ our King comes to us at the Lord’s Supper.  Pastor kneels to one knee as the Body and Blood of Jesus enter the room in the Words of Institution (the congregation can also bow at this time).  Then as we receive the Body and Blood of Jesus we show our greatest reverence to our king and kneel with both knees.

Breakfast – The Burt City Council will be hosting a Breakfast on Saturday,  September 8th  from 8 a.m. to noon at the Burt Activity Complex. Menu: Pancakes, Eggs, Sausages and Drink.  A Free Will donation will be taken with the proceeds going to upkeep of the Burt Activity Complex.

Financial Peace University – Coming Soon!

This fall we will be hosting Financial Peace University by Dave Ramsey.  Through Financial Peace University we learn Biblical ways of taking care of the money that God has entrusted to us. Through video teaching, class discussions, and interactive small group activities, FPU presents Biblical, practical steps to take control of your finances.  We’ll learn how to get rid of debt, manage money, spend and save wisely, and live generously. Class starts on Monday, September 10th and will include a light meal and baby-sitting. Cost for materials is $109.  You can find more information and register at www.trinityalgona.org/fpu or by calling the Trinity Church Office – 295-3518.

What is Operation Barnabas?  In Scripture, Barnabas is known as the “the encourager.” This is what Operation Barnabas strives to do by encouraging our military and their families.  Come to the sixth annual Iowa District West Operation Barnabas Conference on Saturday, October 6, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran in Carroll Iowa to learn more on how you can be involved and “Called to Serve.”   This conference is to inform you on how you can care for the veterans in our congregation or community.  Join us as we work together to serve our military families. Registration information is in the church office.
