August 5, 2018

A Short Council Meeting will be held after church today to discuss the Health Insurance Plan for Pastor.

Truth Terrain – Vacation Bible School is the theme of this year’s VBS.  Join us as we embark on an adventure across multiple terrains learning the truth found in the Bible! Come and learn about the Parables Jesus taught. Truth Terrain will begin tonight and go through Wednesday, August 8th from 6-8 p.m. The picnic/program will be at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.  A short class schedule will be from 6-6:30p.m. that evening.

Coffee/Conversation - I have been gifted a single cup/12 cup coffee maker for my St. John's office, so stop by my office some time for a cup of coffee with me!  I am typically in my office on Tuesdays and Thursdays by 7:30 a.m., Wednesdays by 9:00 a.m. or at any time by appointment.  Feel free to stop in at any time. I'm never too busy to enjoy a coffee and conversation with you.

Adult Bible Study – We will continue our study of the joys and benefits of receiving the Lord's Supper on a regular basis.  The goal of this study is to inspire in us a desire to receive Christ's body and blood every Sunday here at St. John's.  Everyone welcome!!

Sign-up Sheets are available in the back of the church for people to furnish bars/cookies each night of Vacation Bible School.   Also, a sign-up sheet is available for volunteers to help in all areas.   Questions contact Karla Schutter.

No Midweek Divine Service this week due to Vacation Bible School.

Rally Day Partnership Picnic - Trinity and St. John's are co-hosting a prayer service and picnic to kick off the new year of Sunday School and midweek Christian education.  The event will be held Sunday, September 9 at 10:30 a.m. at Smith Lake near the East shelter (that's the one near the entrance).  We will begin with a brief service at 10:30 which will include the installation of Sunday School teachers and presentation of Bibles and Catechisms, followed by a picnic lunch and games.  Food and drink will be provided, but you are encouraged to bring a dessert to share and lawn chairs or blankets to sit on.  The offering collected during the service will go toward the missions that the Trinity and St. John's Sunday Schools will be sending their offerings for the year.  We will introduce these missions during the service.  Keep in mind that this would be a great event to invite friends or family that aren't already connected with a church!  (Flyers available on the back table)

* St. John’s will have our regularly scheduled service at 9:00 a.m. at the church on Sep. 9th.

Ladies Day at St. John's: Hannah Cowell is hosting a social gathering for the women of St. John's and their friends.  This will be an afternoon to enjoy time with friends at St. John's and to invite others to get to know our St. John's family.  On Saturday, August 25th at 1:30 p.m. at St. John's Chipped Inscriptions of Forest City will be leading you through the creation of a sign to hang inside or outside your home.  Choose one of the six designs on the sign-up sheet in the back of church.  The cost is $40 per adult, $20 per child.  Please sign up by August 20th.

Preschool Registration - Kids of the Kingdom Preschool is now accepting registration for the 2018-2019 school year for 3 and 4 year olds.  Please contact the church office at 924-3344 or Jessie Parsons at 320-0501.

Lessons on the Liturgy - I-H-S

The letters “I-H-S” are often found on liturgical artwork in sanctuaries.  The symbol is present in the middle of our altar cross at St. John’s. These are the first two letters and the last letter of “Jesus” as it is rendered in the Greek language, which was a common way of abbreviating a name in the old days.  Therefore the letters “IHS” in a sanctuary is an indication that this a place where the name of Jesus is proclaimed and placed on us in Word and Sacrament.

Financial Peace University- Trinity, Algona will be hosting Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University beginning Monday, September 10th at 6:00 p.m.  Financial Peace University is a money-management class taught with Christian principles.  The class is taught via video clips, a workbook, and discussion led by Pastor Schlund. The class length is nine classes, every Monday at 6:00 p.m. beginning on Sept. 10.  The cost is $100 for the class, workbook, and access to online materials.  The class is open to the public.  Please talk with Pastor Cowell if you are interested in attending.

Philippians Workshop: Pastor and People - Partners in the Gospel!  Mark your calendars and make plans to join us on Tuesday, August 14th at 5:30 p.m. as Trinity partners with Iowa District West to host Rev. Dr. Nathan Meador, the Director of Stewardship for the LCMS who will lead a workshop on our Biblical understanding of stewardship. Contact Trinity if you wish to attend.
