NNew IDW Administration Assistant:

Building Healthy Families: In addition to being overwhelmed with feelings of sadness and hopelessness, another sign of depression is distorted thinking. This may include: overgeneralizing – after one thing goes wrong, thinking, “Things NEVER go right for me;” exaggerated responsibility for others – “Why aren’t you happy? It must be because of something I did or didn’t do;” and negative self-labeling – “I didn’t get up in time to exercise today – I’m lazy and a failure.” Left unchallenged, distorted messages only deepen the despair. Depression is not a lack of faith or a character flaw, but a serious illness which when left untreated can destroy a life, a marriage and a family. It is treatable and you can feel better. See your medical doctor and remember that your pastor and Lutheran Family Service counselors, who share your faith in our God who keeps His promises, can help. Giving Faithfully: Giving is connected to grace. Giving is a sign that we "get it," that we understand grace, and that we truly believe what God has done for us in Jesus. Grace is God's attitude of undeserved favor toward sinners; it also means God's unearned mercy is powerfully working within us. Faithful management of God's resources, then, is part of a relationship created by grace. It is not governed by rules – we must do this, and we must give that – but by grace, that is, by our relationship to God in Christ Jesus. How much we earn and how much we give, then, are deeply spiritual matters. We cannot go from paycheck to paycheck without thinking carefully about what we are doing with our money. We cannot use God's gifts without carefully considering the ways in which our actions affect others. Not if we are faithful managers, we cannot!

Building Healthy Families:Much of today’s media reflects values that we wouldn’t want our family to see or use as a model for life, but there are notable exceptions! Why not plan a weekly movie night with your family or friend group, intentionally choosing films that are both entertaining and faith-affirming? Here’s an idea to get you started: “Where Hope Grows” (streaming on many online platforms) tells the story of Calvin, a former baseball player who struggles with addiction and loss who befriends Produce, a young man with Down Syndrome who works at the grocery story. God uses their relationship to help Calvin rediscover hope and faith. Among the unwholesome story lines out there are some that shine light and challenge us to change our opinions in helpful ways…like remembering the value of people born with Down Syndrome! Stewardship Corner:  Giving Faithfully:

Our faithful giving honors and glorify the Lord. The act of giving is discussed extensively in both the Old and New Testaments; both the poor and rich, both young and old gave.  We are not to give out of duty or for recognition.  Rather, faith in and love for God motivates us to give and to give generously.  God’s grace empowers us to be faithful with our lives and resources.  God’s love and generosity are seen through our giving.
