Building Healthy Families: Parents, grandparents and pew buddies—where’s the best place to sit in church? In short, it depends! There are definite advantages to various seats throughout a sanctuary or worship space. If you have an infant who finds comfort in movement, a spot near the back where you can easily stand and sway or walk around may be right for your family. If you have littles who find it difficult to stay engaged in the service, sitting close to the front where they can see what’s going on could help improve focus. Sitting near the aisle might also help kids to see and take part in worship, whereas others may benefit from being “locked in” toward the center of a pew, not having an escape route. Try out a few different places and see what works best for you and your crew! Lutheran Family Service www.LutheranFamilyService.org

Building Healthy Families: It’s been said here are two kinds of people in the world: those who wake up and say, “Good morning, Lord!” and those who wake up and say, “Good Lord, it’s morning!” Which are you? It is usually true that mood follows message. How we feel emotionally results from how we think about what is happening. The next time you are having a difficult day, stop and check your thoughts. Listen to what you are telling yourself. Challenge and then replace negative, untrue self-statements with the truth. (Hint: look for truths from the author of life Himself in your Bible). LFS counselors are available to help you learn to change negative thought patterns, replacing them with truth. Lutheran Family Service www.LutheranFamilyService.org

Building Healthy Families: A research project conducted with college age students in the Midwest found that most of them reported having an important relationship with grandparents or significant elders who influenced their values, goals, and life choices and gave them a sense of self, roots, and tradition. Grandparents and older members of our church family, do you know how important you are? Make sure the young adults in your family and congregation who have gone off to college or are returning to high school this month continue to hear from you. Now, more than ever, they need your love and support – even if they’re not asking for it! Lutheran Family Service www.LutheranFamilyService.org
