Announcements

July 29, 2018

Adult Bible Study – Adult Bible Study has just started a new series on the blessings of Holy Communion.  In this series we will study the joys and benefits of receiving the Lord's Supper on a regular basis.  The goal of this study is to inspire in us a desire to receive Christ's body and blood every Sunday here at St. John's.  If you have any questions or curiosities about the Biblical, historical, and Lutheran foundations of weekly Communion and the blessings it brings to God's people I encourage you to attend this Bible study series.

Sign-up Sheets are available in the back of the church for people to furnish bars/cookies each night of Vacation Bible School.   Also, a sign-up sheet is available for volunteers to help in all areas.   Questions contact Karla Schutter.

Midweek Divine Service will be held Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at 6:30 p.m.

Rally Day Partnership Picnic - Trinity and St. John's are co-hosting a prayer service and picnic to kick off the new year of Sunday School and midweek Christian education.  The event will be held Sunday, September 9 at 10:30 a.m. at Smith Lake near the East shelter (that's the one near the entrance).  We will begin with a brief service at 10:30 which will include the installation of Sunday School teachers and presentation of Bibles and Catechisms, followed by a picnic lunch and games.  Food and drink will be provided, but you are encouraged to bring a dessert to share and lawn chairs or blankets to sit on.  The offering collected during the service will go toward the missions that the Trinity and St. John's Sunday Schools will be sending their offerings for the year.  We will introduce these missions during the service.  Keep in mind that this would be a great event to invite friends or family that aren't already connected with a church!

* St. John’s will have our regularly scheduled service at 9:00 a.m. at the church on Sep. 9th.

Ladies Day at St. John's: Hannah Cowell is hosting a social gathering for the women of St. John's and their friends.  This will be an afternoon to enjoy time with friends at St. John's and to invite others to get to know our St. John's family.  On Saturday, August 25th at 1:30 p.m. at St. John's Chipped Inscriptions of Forest City will be leading you through the creation of a sign to hang inside or outside your home.  Choose one of the six designs on the sign-up sheet in the back of church.  The cost is $40 per adult, $20 per child.  Please sign up by August 20th.

Truth Terrain – Vacation Bible School is the theme of this year’s VBS.  Join us as we embark on an adventure across multiple terrains learning the truth found in the Bible! Come and learn about the Parables Jesus taught. Truth Terrain will begin on Sunday, August 5th and go through Wednesday, August 8th from 6-8 p.m. On the last day (Wed.) our schedule will change a little.  We will have class at 6:00 p.m. and a picnic and program at 6:30 p.m. Call the church office at 515-924-3344 or go to the church website to sign up on the registration forms, www.stjohnsburt.org or you may email the church at: churchoffice@stjohnsburt.org

Preschool Registration - Kids of the Kingdom Preschool is now accepting registration for the 2018-2019 school year for 3 and 4 year olds.  Please contact the church office at 924-3344 or Jessie Parsons at 320-0501.

Lessons on the Liturgy - The Chi-Rho

A popular symbol of Christ is the Chi-Rho (kie-row).  This is the symbol that appears to us to be an English X on top of a P.  Those are actually two Greek letters, the “X” being the chi and the “P” being the rho.  These are the first two letters of the title “Christ.”  Therefore when you see the Chi-Rho on stoles, paraments, altars, or anywhere else in the church you are reminded that this is a place where Christ is present to fulfill his role as the one anointed to be your savior and eternal king.

Flooding in Iowa-IDW -As you are all aware, we have had a very wet summer across north and central Iowa.  In the last month heavy downfalls of rain caused flooding in the Ames, Ankeny, and Des Moines area.  A variety of individuals and churches have been impacted by flood waters.  Iowa District West congregations have always been great at responding to the need when asked for disaster relief funds and now we have needs in our own district.  Now is the time for these individuals and churches to begin rebuilding and replacing their losses. If you or your church wish to make a donation (unused funds will support future disasters), please make checks payable to IDW-Iowa Flooding and send to:   Iowa District West, 409 Kenyon Rd Suite B, Fort Dodge, IA 50501Questions? Contact Ellie Menz at 515-370-1159 or ellie@iowadistrictwest.org

Blake and Jenna Bolerjack in Concert will be held at the Burt Presbyterian Church tonight (July 29th) at 6:30 p.m. A concert mix of gospel and contemporary Christian music will be sung.  Free Will Offering
