Fourth Sunday of Easter

Collect of the DayAlmighty God, merciful Father, since You have wakened from death the Shepherd of Your sheep, grant us Your Holy Spirit that when we hear the voice of our Shepherd we may know Him who calls us each by name and follow where He leads; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Special Mother’s Day Offering – On this Mother’s Day as we give thanks for all the mothers among us we also pray for all mothers who are struggling, especially during an unplanned pregnancy.  Included in the bulletin is information on how you can become involved with Lutherans for Life.  We’re also taking a door offering for Cornerstone for Life Pregnancy Resource Center in Algona.  Cornerstone is a Christian pregnancy center offering a 24 hour hotline, pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, medical insurance information and mentoring as well as many other services on an individual basis.  Visit cornerstoneforlifeprc.com/support/ or call 515-341-1780 to find out ways you can donate your time, money, and/or resources.

Farewell to Pastor Hauan - Next Sunday, May 19th, is Pastor Hauan's last Sunday with us at St. John's.  We will have a farewell reception for him in the basement after service.  You are also welcome to drop off cards at that time as we thank him for his service and wish him God's blessings on his next call.  Pastor Hauan's final Sunday at Trinity is June 9th.

A Church Roof Fund has been set up for anyone wishing to donate.  Just designate “church roof fund” on your offering envelope.  A down payment of $25,000 has been sent to Jaeger Associates so we are currently on their list.   We helped them hit a milestone of 250 church roofs!!!  That is incredible!!  Work will begin later this year.

Partnership Ascension Day Service and Social - Join us Thursday, May 30th at 6:00 p.m. at Trinity, Algona as we celebrate the Ascension of Our Lord.  Stay for ice cream and desserts in the Trinity Life Center following the service.

Teacher and Students Needed – Kids of the Kingdom Preschool is accepting applications for a preschool teacher for the 2019-2020 school year.  Please send or email application letter and resume to: St John’s Lutheran Church, PO Box 98, Burt, Iowa 50522 or churchoffice@stjohnsburt.org.  Kids of the Kingdom is also accepting student registrations for the 2019-2020 school year.  Please call the St. John's Lutheran church office at 515-924-3344 for information or email, churchoffice@stjohnsburt.org.

Partnership Event Planning Representative Needed - St. John's is in need of one or two people to help coordinate volunteers and materials for partnership events.  This doesn't mean you would have to participate in all the events, but simply be the contact person between Trinity and St. John's for when partnership events are being planned.  Basically, if you are good at hosting parties, then this is the job for you!  Contact Pastor Cowell if you are interesting or would like more information.

Flocknote Text Sender Wanted - I'm looking for a volunteer who would like to take over sending out our daily "text on the Text" or our daily prayer chain text (or both) on Flocknote.  Creating text messages on Flocknote is very easy to do and I will walk you through the process.  Messages can be created on your computer or cell phone, and they can be pre-scheduled as far in advance as you'd like.  I'm happy to continue sending these messages, I just thought this would be a good way to serve St. John's that can always work with your schedule. - Pastor Cowell

The Blessings of Weekly Communion – If you weren’t able to attend our Lenten Bible study on the blessings of weekly Communion I encourage you to pick up the handout on the side table in back of the sanctuary that contains all five of the Bible study topics.  As we keep learning about and considering the blessings of weekly Communion I encourage you to continue to bring me your questions and comments.

Camp Okoboji Events - As summer gets closer, don't forget to check out the schedule of events at Camp Okoboji either from the pamphlet in back or at: www.campokoboji.org/camp-schedule.php.  Camp Okoboji is also hosting a volunteer day on Saturday, May 18th if you would like to help beautify the camp for the summer season.  Meals and lodging if needed are provided to volunteers at no cost.  Call the camp office at 712-337-3325 to let them know you're coming or to ask about what projects they have for you to help with.

Camp Okoboji Quilt Auction will be held on Saturday, June 15th at 12:30 p.m. You may view the quilts Friday, June 14th 5-7 p.m., before the auction or online at www.campokoboji.org.

A Camp on Biblical Masculinity - Are you a man? Then this camp is for you.  The LCMS camp near Solon, IA is hosting an event for men of all ages 8 and up - single, married, with children or no children on June 9-12.  The camp will be focused on learning the characteristics of biblical masculinity and doing various "man stuff." There will be a 45 minute Bible study each day, and the rest of the day will consist of outdoor activity.  This would be a great father/son/grandfather outing or just an opportunity to enjoy time with other Christian men.  Pastor Cowell will be attending this event.  See the flier in back, and register at: evanguard.org/csmpregistrstion

Pastoral Candidates - Please pray for these seminarians who have received calls to congregations in Iowa District West: Trevor Freudenburg (St. Louis): Calvary, Sioux City; Michael McGinley (Fort Wayne): Christ the King, Spencer; Aaron Zimmerman (Fort Wayne): Holy Trinity, Farnhamville/Immanuel, Pomeroy.

Lessons on the Liturgy – The Agnus Dei

Agnus Dei is Latin for “Lamb of God.”  This hymn became part of the liturgy around 700 A.D.  The hymn sings the word of John 1:29, “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”  The Agnus Dei also brings to mind the Lamb who was slain who sits victoriously on the throne of God in the book of Revelation.  We sing the Agnus Dei as we approach the altar to receive the body and blood of Christ.  This hymn reminds us that Jesus is both our Good Shepherd and the Lamb of God by whose sacrifice we have eternal life.
