Building Healthy Families: When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant, I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years. (Mark Twain) Truth be told, parents and their children get along much better when the adolescent years are over. Dr. James Dobson once said that the goal of parenting teenagers is simply to survive and live to tell about it. If you and your family are navigating the turbulent waters of adolescence, don’t give up. It will get better! Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Rejoice in the Lord

In Philippians 4:4, we read Paul’s words, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, “Rejoice.”  This is a very emphatic directive because “rejoice” is followed by “always” and it is repeated “again I say rejoice.”  If our lives are not expressing our joy, or if we’ve given up on happiness, we’re missing out on what God intends for us.  In the words of Charles Spurgeon, “God made human beings as He made His other creatures, to be happy…They are in their right element when they are happy.”  In his book Happiness, Rev. Randy Alcorn writes the following: “C. S. Lewis said, ‘It is a Christian duty…for everyone to be as happy as he can.’  Happiness is a privilege.  However, since God repeatedly calls upon to rejoice, delight and be glad in Him, we have both a privilege and an obligation to do so.”
