Pastoral Call Process Update

-The Partnership Associate pastor call committee has received a list of pastoral candidates who were nominated for our consideration by members of our congregations and by President Turner.

-The committee is now in the process of reviewing the candidates’ information and availability for a call and selecting several to interview to get a better idea if they would be the right pastor for our congregations.

-The self-evaluation documents of each of these ten pastors in which they describe their ministry style as well as their preferences regarding various church practices and traditions are available in the church office.  You are welcome to read these documents for yourself in the church office Tuesday-Thursday 8:00 am-12:00 pm, or by special appointment. **These documents cannot be copied or leave the church office.

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“Where is Christ, the King? In heaven, to be sure.  In this direction it behooves you, soldier of Christ, to direct your course.  Forget all earthly delights.  A soldier does not build a house.  He does not aspire to the possession of lands.  He does not concern himself with devious, coin-purveying trade. [...] The soldier enjoys a sustenance provided by the king.  He need not furnish his own nor vex himself in this regard.” - Basil the Great, An Introduction to the Ascetical Life, qtd. in ACCS: Colossians-Philemon, p. 241.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Large Catechism, Part III: The Lord’s Prayer, paragraphs 71-72, 75-76

Give us this day our daily bread.

Here we consider the poor breadbasket, the necessities of our body and of the temporal life. For when you mention and pray for daily bread, you pray for everything that is necessary in order to have and enjoy daily bread. It would be very proper to place on the coat of arms of every pious prince a loaf of bread instead of a lion. This would remind both princes and their subjects that by their office we have protection and peace. Without them, we could not eat and keep our daily bread. Therefore, princes are also worthy of all honor. We should give to them for their office what we ought and can, as to people through whom we enjoy what we have in peace and quietness. In addition, we should also pray for them that through them God may bestow on us more blessings and goods. [...]

Let this be a very brief explanation, showing how far this petition extends through all conditions on earth. One could list all the things that are included, like when we ask God to give us food and drink, clothing, house and home, and health of body. Or when we ask that He cause the grain and fruit of the field to grow and mature well. Furthermore, we ask that He give and preserve for us a godly wife, children, and servants. We ask that He cause our work to prosper and succeed, favor us with faithful neighbors and good friends, and other such things.
