Old Testament: Isaiah 6:1-13

Isaiah sees the Lord sitting on His throne in heaven, surrounded by the seraphim.

Epistle: 1 Corinthians 14:13b-20

St. Paul says that he would rather speak five words with his mind in order to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.

Gospel: Luke 5:1-11

After causing a miraculous catch of fish, Jesus says to Peter, James, and John: “From now on you will be catching men.”

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS

“This boat [of the Church] sails upon the deeps of this world, so that, when the earth is destroyed, it will preserve unharmed all those it has taken in. Its foreshadowing can be seen already in the Old Testament. For as Noah’s ark preserved alive everyone whom it had taken in when the world was going under, so also Peter’s church will bring back unhurt everyone whom it embraces when the world goes up in flames. And as a dove brought the sign of peace to Hoah’s ark when the flood was over, so also Christ will bring the joy of peace to Peter’s church when the judgment is over.” - Maximus of Turin, Sermon 49.1-3, qtd. in ACCS: Luke, 88.

LESSONS ON THE LITURGY

The Sanctus

Sanctus is Latin for “Holy.”  This ancient hymn, likely originating in the 2nd century, combines the song of the seraphim in Isaiah’s vision of the Lord in his throne room (“Holy, Holy, Holy…”) with the Palm Sunday praises of the people as Jesus entered Jerusalem (“Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord”).  We sing the Sanctus as a song of adoration and celebration as Jesus the king and savior of all creation enters our presence at the Sacrament of the Altar.

FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

Augsburg Confession, Article XIV: Ecclesiastical Order

Of Ecclesiastical Order [our churches] teach that no one should publicly teach in the Church or administer the Sacraments unless he be regularly called.
